96 civic making nocking noiseby valve cover any ideas

how are you not squirting oil everywhere with the valve cover off and the engine on?
Make sure that what you're not hearing is knocking from the block, first off.
I would check the valve clearances, then check the timing. Those would probably be the 2 easiest things you could do. Remove the spark plugs and check the color of them. Make sure the engine electrical is working well ( dizzy, plugs, etc ) .
