Default Swapped cams on my SV650

I have read about the cam swap for SVs for a while now but haven't had the ***** to open up my motor. I picked up a used set of 1st gen intake cams for $90 and decided to go for it. Install was super easy with the walkthrough from BARF and it only took me 4 leisurely hours. Power is improved. Nothing earth shattering. But it did power wheelie in second gear during the test ride, and it wouldn't even power wheelie in 1st before. Top end is much stronger. Peter lombardi took pictures for me and lent a hand. Here they are.

Can you tell me more about this cam swap? What's so different about the first gen intake cams?

I've always loved your SV Good chance I'll have one as my next bike

Pfff, you talkin about my ghoater?

There was a good writeup on Svrider with pictures, but the pictures are gone after the server move.
Here's the BARF one

On the first gen SVs they swap both cams and gain quite a bit more power. On the 2nd gens you swap the 1st gen intake with the exhaust side because it has more lift than the exhaust cams. This gets you a little more power without sacrificing reliability, or much else.

i think they move thier intake cams to the exhaust side and swap in 2nd gen intake cams for the intake side. That swap makes nearly 4hp throughout the entire rpm range. But that puts a 1st gen on par with a 2nd gen that has a cam swap. So i'm doin alright.

on BARF there were several dynos. I really liked the 1st gen dyno with multiple mods

Stage 0: 65.1 HP @ 9000 RPM, 41.1 ft-lbs, 14:1. Renegade slip-on exhaust, 15 pilot jets, 137.5 main jets, 1 shim on needle.

Stage 1: 69.9 HP @ 9300 RPM, 42.75 ft-lbs, 15:1. M4 full exhaust, 17.5 pilot jets, 152.5 main jets, 2 shims on needle, desnorkled airbox.

Stage 2: 76.6 HP @ 9700 RPM, 44.88 ft-lbs, 12:1. Cam swap, M4 full exhaust, 17.5 pilot jets, 157.5 main jets, 2 shims on needle, desnorkled airbox.

a/f for stage II

that's on a 1st gen though and they swap both cams. But, the amount of power a 2nd gen makes with its cam swap is very similar. Especially with mods.

Does anyone know if you can order headers from m4 to complete a system if you've got a slipon from them?

Any issues with the stock valve springs? I'm assuming the cams you swapped in have more lift, but what about duration?

I'm not sure about duration, but the lift is more, but it's nothing bigger than what the bike was meant to take. Lots of racers have done the cam swap without any valvetrain issues.

looks great. always love watchin your bike progress. couple questions tho, 1. how does this effect your gas mileage? 2. why is it in all of your pics of installs you are never dirty or greasy?
