Help Please - Where should I start looking first?
My wife's 2000 CR-V put out two OBD II codes P0301 & P1399. It only has about 70k miles on it and we just bought it at around 65k miles. I haven't done any maintenance on it since we got it because the engine looked and ran great. It still runs good but she said that when the light came on she THINKS she felt it running rough for a minute and it's been running smooth since. I reset the codes after refitting the spark plug wires(one seemed a bit loose) and the code came back the next day(still running smooth). The maintenance schedule for '98-'00 said only to adjust the valves if noisy until 105k mi and they seem quiet.
What do you guys think? Any ideas on where I should start? I'm thinking of just doing a tune up this weekend (plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter, oil). Any thoughts on the matter would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Justin
It's a 2000 EX automatic and we use Chevron 91 octane by the way.

What do you mean the second code is no good? And secondly, where did you get this quote, what is the context? I just wonder what year CR-V it was intended for since the engine is different from '99 on if I'm not mistaken.
Thanks

That came from my service data. The engine was the same from 1997-2001. But this problem existed from 199-2001 (they changed the head a little along with the intake) i've seen it many times. You may be able to get by with just adjusting the valves but it's probably going to need the head rebuilt.
I have no data for the second code.

Sounds like bad news but thanks for your help. I'll start with a tune-up, clear the code and see if it comes back before I go crazy rebuilding the head.
I just went to Honda and spoke with the assistant service manager who checked their database and told me there were no recalls/TSBs for the 2000 CR-V that had to do with my problem. He did say that it is a fairly common problem on the 1st gen that the valves receed into the head and need to be adjusted frequently to avoid doing damage to the engine as Captain Evil Monkey suggested also. I mentioned that the service manual says to adjust at 105k miles unless the valves are noisy and he said that the 105k adjustment had been revised and is supposed to be done every 15k. His hope is that since the car only has 70k miles on it I will hopefully be able to simply adjust the valves and reset the check engine light again and be done. However, if damage was done to the head/valves and the light comes back on he said that "even though I'm not the origonal owner if I brought it in they'd see what they could do to help me out and gain me as a customer". Hopefully it won't come to that. I'll be adjusting the CR-V valves tonight or tomorrow.
If anyone has any other ideas or experiences with this issue I'd appreciate any ideas you might have.
Thanks,
Justin

This is a common problem for most early models Crv's. Check the valve adjustment. Youll know when you wont have any adjustment to your rocker arm. If you are able to adjust the valve, more and likely thats not the issue. If the vehicle is not running rough,I doubt this is the problem. Another direction to be looking at are the injectors for leakage. This usually occurs after shut-down and leaks out into the cylinder flooding it for the next start causing the misfire. With an HDS you can inspect the freeze data to determine when the DTC was set(when hot or cold). Without an HDS you could do a self diag. Attach a fuel pressure gauge and monitor the bleed off. Make sure to pinch off the return. More then 10 psi in 1/2 is beyond spec and will tell you an injector is bleeding off. If the DTC is reoccuring you may have to swap injectors and wait for it to recode. If it recodes a diff. cylinder, that helps pinpoint what injector is bad. Let us know how the valve inspection goes.

Yes there is. It's Service bulletin 03-038, the same one I quoted up there. I can email you a copy if you would like.
