2nd gen CL's have the glass tranny as well. I think Acura extended the warranty to 150k miles, so there isn't as much of a risk anymore.
I have '97 2.2 5-speed for a daily and it's a great car as far as reliability. It rides smooth, it's quiet and I average about 28mpg city, but it's painfully slow.
The 2nd gens are pretty much nicer in every aspect compared to the 1st gens, but do not buy the one your friend has for sale. Once the warranty is up, you'll playing a pretty big gamble. I'd suggest keeping a couple thousand laying around just in case the tranny goes bad.
If you can afford an '03 CL Type S, get it. 260hp, 6 speed tranny, optional nav...
Those still go for well over $10k, but it's a dope ride and pretty rare.

i think im gonna get it and do like you said (have a some $ on the side just incase).

I think the original warranty was 60k miles, then it was extended to 100k and more recently extended to 150k.
Aside from the tranny issue, I'm sure you'll love the car. I sometimes regret not getting a 2nd gen.
Check out the CL forums of http://acurazine.com. There's a lot of good info on that site.

I though no CL's came with Nav, but apperently they do.
I doubt i would do it, but would there be alot of work to put nav in my 01?
My 01 is on its second trans. and its getting shitty, i can't city drive it in D5, has to be in D4 or it goes spuratic(sp).

Navigation was available on all CL's from '01 to '03. It's possible to install Navi on a non-equiped CL, but it takes some time and patience. The most expensive parts to source will be the Nav screen, brain and GPS antenna. I've seen these parts come up several times on ebay for under $700 combined.
If you're thinking about a DIY project check out NaviInstall.

the trans warranty is actually 109k i would not be scared of i am an acura tech. we do alot of tranny's and i own a tl-s myself umm find out if trans has ever been replaced if so great if not just change with only honda fluid atf-z1 and i change mine every other oil change and its pretty straight though they are some moody tranny's but if you always always always let your car warm up for about 5 mins just to get the fluid movin you will be ok i would not get a 1st gen cl by no means holla if you have any questions

i see, thanks for the great advice, im strongly considering the 01 CL type S, it is on its original trans but i know the owner and he dosent abuse his cars, he's owned it for about 60,000 miles and flushed the fluid a few times in that time frame, but i certainly will follow your advice to a T

warranty is for 109K or 7 years 9 months. there is also an odometer settlement that adds 5K to that warranty for a total of 114K or 7 years 9 months
03 cars are partially covered. (depends on VIN)

i can get you tranny cooler for pretty damn cheap, my friend had a 4 pass on his 500whp auto supra and it did the job no problem, i think he payed like $60 for the cooler and then whatever labor was... it was a hose clamp syle cooler not a fitting type.

I had a 99 2.3 with the 5 speed and used to loved it. No problems save for warped front rotors at one point but I think that's every accords problem... The only thing I don't like about this car is that it simply looks like a steaming pile at stock ride height, tuck a lil tire and it's sex!

not sure you can put a traditional tranny cooler on there.......
My car spends almost all of it's time below 3K and a good chunk below 2.5K.......just don't need anything more in DD
