It can have a swap. Run Street Mod 2.

My #1 suggestion is don't spend $1 on modding a car for autocross until you 1) go to an event and drive your car as-is or just hang out and ask questions and 2) look at the rulebook. Too many people start modding a car without reading the rulebook, and then find out that something they did has put them in a class where they'll never be competitive.
You can download the SCCA rulebook free here:

It's a lot to digest, so I'll give you some quick (honda related) opinions:
You need to figure out how fast you can afford to go, how much you like to work on the car, and if the car will be used for street driving or anything else.
In the Stock classes, you can only do minor mods, so the car can still be daily driven. But you need race compound tires to keep up, and they are expensive, and the tire expense never stops.
The ITR is the car to have in D-Stock, S2000s do well in A-Stock, and CRXs are competitive in H-Stock.
In the Street Touring classes (STS, STS2, STX), more mods are allowed, but the suspension changes you'll want will make the car less drivable on the street. But these classes run street tires, so the recurring expenses are lower. I think STS & STS2 are the best bang for the buck classes out there.
In STS, the old 89ish Civic Si is the car to have, and the CRX Si is great in STS2, although Miatas are a good option too.
In the Mod classes (SM & SM2) you can have engine swaps, but to be really competitive beyond local events, you'll probably need boost. A competitive car is going to be expensive and uncomfortable. My feeling is there are a lot of 'casual autocrossers' in SM who wish they had built their cars for a cheaper class.
I'm not sure what events are close to you in the Savannah area. Both Atlanta region (http://soloatlanta.com) and Dixie Region (www.dixiescca.com) put on good events, but both look to be 3+ hours from you.
Hope that helps

If you go SM with your CRX, don't expect to win much in a high populated area. FWD is just not the way to go for that class at all.
If you want to get serious with AutoX, I beleive that FWD is not the way to go at all.. . Sure people are competitive out there with FWD but hey, we're not fooling anyone.

Wow if that's not the most ignorant comment I have ever heard. That's like saying white people are the worst basketball players.
Apparently you have never heard of Chris Travis, Allen Kugler, Jim Harnish (to name a few) who have won Nationals with Civics (or at least trophied in the top 3).

I don't agree. In SM, you may be right. But to say 'FWD is not the way to go for autox' is pretty misleading. Autox is about classing, and classes are about grouping cars with similar performance, regardless of drivetrain layout. Nobody expects a stock Civic to keep up with a stock Z06, but they don't have to because they aren't classed together.
Look at DS: fwd ITR vs. rwd BMW 330 vs. awd WRX. The ITR has less hp & fwd, but less weight too. An ITR won DS at the national championships last year, and off the top of my head, I think 7 or 8 of the top 10 DS cars were ITRs. See also: GS, HS, STS, ST2, STX which all have competitive, if not overdog, fwd cars.
Depending on the class, fwd is not necessarily a handicap in autox.

Very good points made. In autox, seat time is the single best thing you can have. I personally run in the dixie region, and it's very small by comparison to Atlanta region. If you want to go out and have fun, run whatever.
However, if you plan on being competitive (and you will want to eventually), stay away from the mod classes unless you have lots of bank, because those Sti's and Evo's don't play...Stock class or Street touring classes are wear you want to run...

I beleive there are far more ignorant comments that have been made on this board. Read sentence two of your post.. . I can find more by you if you really want me to.. .
I know of them and I talk to Rodney all the time.. . I respect the guy very much for his accomplishments as well as the other FWD guys that placed at Nationals with a FWD setup.
From what I gather, it sounds like the kid wants to BUILD a car, start fresh, and I'm guessin buying an ITR is out of the question??? Just b/c this is HONDA-tech, doesn't mean that other platforms besides Hondas cash cow, FWD platform, can't be discussed. Building a FWD car usually outclasses it pretty quick for a NEWB from what I have gathered over the past couple years.
I gave my OPINION!! I'm not going to argue one way or another for the kid. Everyone has a butthole and they all stink. If you think my opinion stinks, disregard it.. .
On a good note: My car is classed as SM b/c of my K20 swap. My region is pretty small. I can win an event in my area, in my class with 225 r comps.. . As long as an M3 or EVO with r componds doesn't show up.. .
You can AutoX in just about anything bud and you can have fun either way you go. Do some research in more places than just Honda-tech. Look for local region websites here http://www.scca.com/divisions.aspx
Good luck!
