Default 89 Civic - will not start - plz help

Ok last Thursday I was driving down the road and my car jerked and then shut off, and would not start again. I was going fast enough to attempt a bump start on it, and nothing would not start managed to get it into a parking lot and parked it. I removed one of the spark plug wires and used a screwdriver to see if I was getting a spark - that passed there is a spark. Did not test all plugs but I will tonight. Upon inspection under the hood I discovered that one of the bolts on the fuel filter had broke off but it was not the main hollow bolt, it was the little 1/4" bolt that screws into the large hollow bolt, and I was leaking gas from there. I replaced the fuel filter but the bolt could not be located at AutoZone (only choice I had they were near the parking lot) per my fathers advice since the bolt broke off and there was enough of the bolt inside the hollow bolt, I used an epoxy to fill the hole left by the broken bolt. So now I have a new fuel filter, and it does not leak. But I still can not get my car started, when I crank it over it sounds like it wants to start, it turns over well and fast. It almost seems like there is no gas getting to the cylinders. Do these cars have a fuel pump or is it foot operated?

I know about the relay behind the panel - rebuilt it 4 years ago - works like a champ.
its the 1.5l engine
and there are no after market engine upgrades - yet.
i have a cam and ecu unit and a 5 speed transmission - but no place to install it.

the fuel pump is in-tank. therefore you should hear it prime when you turn the key on.

then your fuel pump is working. only primes for a few seconds. other thing you can do is hang your fuel rail over a bucket. and see if all the injectors are spraying. if you find you got both fuel and spark after that..id check timing.

I don't know that I'd trust epoxy to hold. The bolt that I think your describing is just a standard metric bolt, with a copper gasket. You should be able to get both the bolt and a copper gasket, at any auto parts store.

What it sounds like it might be is something to do with the fuel pump. Their is a return line, on the right side of the throttle body, which comes off of a pressure regulator. Their should be some fuel coming out of the regulator, if the fuel pump is working properly.

If you can hear something running for about 2 seconds, then it sounds like the pump is getting energized, initially. The other thing you should check is to see if you have 12 volts going to the injectors. The yellow/black wire on either one of your injectors should measure 12 volts, when you are trying to start the car. It sounds like you could be wrestling with either the pump, which is located in the fuel tank, or the relay.

the epoxy is temporary, i used it because auto zone didnt have what i needed. when i get to a Meyers i will get the correct bolts, the epoxy is holding now. if i can get the car started i will be much happier. i'm going to post a picture of my engine when i get hom, because i dont think there are fuel injectors.

I had a similar problem when I bought my 91 civic. For some strange reason after replacing the relay and fuel pump car would not start.. I pull the injector out and put them back in and the car started.. weird.. dont have a manual with me right now, but you could also ohm out the injector to see if its good or bad.. you never know..

Remember you need spark, fuel and air for combustion. Make sure fuel is getting to the fuel filter....

Have you checked that you're getting the proper fuel pressure with that epoxy in place?

the bolt is still broke off inside the Hollow bolt. i put the epoxy on there to keep gas from leaking out the top of the hollow bolt. i don't have an eazy out set, or a drill press to do it right,

when i attempt to turn the engine over it sounds like its trying to ignite, almost like there is not enough fuel getting to the cylinders.

on these aluminum engines is it even wise to attempt to use starting fluid? my dad said it would probably blow up the engine.

every once in a while it coughs or chokes makes a sound like its flooded.

I think you may have clogged the hole in the banjo bolt in the fuel filter, causing you to not get enough fuel. I would suggest you not do anything with the car until you can get that broken bolt out and assess the situation.
