Default What is the diff between D16a from japan, and my d16y8 besides the head?

So besides it being dohc, what are the other differences between the d16a and the d16y8. I'm thinking about buying a d16a head and putting it on my d16y8, then boosting. but i want to know all the aspects of the motor, since i see a really good deal for the entire engine.
To be honest, i never even knew there was a dohc d16... so this is new info for me

DOHC D-Series = DOHC ZC

While it is possible to swap the head over with a lot of custom fabrication (Images of welders and custom plates should come to your head right now) there is really no cost effective benefit. Beyond that difference -
Pistons --> Higher Dome in ZC
Oiling System --> More flow through the non-Y model D-series
And there's some more item's that aren't really needed to be known that aren't already in FAQs in locations such as http://thezcr.com/.

BTW, just boost the D16Y8, get it properly tuned, call it a day.

Well the fabrication is free.. matter of fact the whole job is... my bf gunna paint his car for him swapping my head and turbo'ing my car. The guy thats gunna fabricate everything was the one that suggested getting the d16a head since i told him i want minumum of 200 whp. so i was wondering what the differences are. thanks for the info

its simply not cost effective to mate a DOHC block to a SOHC head.

guys hit 200 whp on sohc d-series all day long.

if you want the dohc, then buy the whole engine.

its not worth the trouble, even if it is free, bc it would take weeks to fab up the parts.

why are you trying to reinvent the wheel?

it is possible but not practical.

the dohc zc actually has less power then the single slammer vtec. I have the DOHC ZC, and love the engine to pieces, but the power figures are so similar i dont know why you wouldnt start with the one you already have.

like i originally posted, i didnt really know about the d16a. this was suggested by the guy whos gunna fabricate the set up for me. i would love to drop a b18 in and boost it. but i dunno what money hes looking to put in it. the paint job is around 3500-4500 and hes getting it free. we'll see if i cant talk him into it.

i would recomend a usdm d16a6 block with your y8 head. the usdm a6 is super strong. Then with a nice rebuild u can hit like 180 or so. its plenty for a cra of this size. good luck.

honestly, please dont talk him into it . Putting a Dohc head on a Sohc Block simply wont ever work correctly, there was someone that did this awhile back, (and someone correct me if im wrong) and i think that motor only ran for like 6000 miles or something like that. Go for it if you really want to but i dont see the point. Build a sohc and get the same power, but gain reliability.
just my .02 cents

you didnt read what i wrote correctly. he was the one who suggested the dohc head on my sohc block. i said i was going to try to talk him into dropping a full b18 swap n then boosting it.

I don't know that I would trust anyone to work on my car that suggested a DOHC ZC head on a SOHC block.

even if he agrees to put a b18 in and boost it, I don't think I'd let him do the work you know what I'm saying?

Don't do it, it's not practical. Spend the money on the motor that's in your car already.
