Default is it my alternator, starter, or battery?

my car does not start sometimes after a few hours of sitting and definately will not start after a few days of being parked. my battery gets drained and i have little power when i try starting it, and it wont start. i hook up the jump start cables and before it would crank right up. but now even with enough power, it doesn't! it sounds as if the starter theeth were broken, i can hear metal grinding & spinning.
can my starter be busted?

i whacked it a few times with a hammer and screwdriver and nothing!

help? ...

If you hear metal grinding, I doubt it's the battery, so take that off the list, or borrow one from a buddy...

What I would do is get my alternator and battery tested before I went and bought anything, GL...

I had the same problem. Try clean ALL the grounds and see if that helps out. Theres one on the tranny battery and top of the valve cover.

Well first off i would test for parasitic drain since something is obviously draining your battery when it shouldnt. The max allowable drain with key off is .050 amps. Easy test is to disconnect the ground to the battery and using a multimeter (switched to amps) completing the circuit you should be able to see how much draw you have, from there pull fuses to different circuits till the amps are eliminated. This narrows the draw down to that particular circuit.

As for the starter making bad sounds have you check the teeth on the flywheel or the starter itself...

Put a volt meter on the batter when the car is running, if you get 14v the alternator is good.

Need to start doing some test to figure it out.

Toss a volt meter on the battery, see if you have 12v. Crank the car, see if it drops down super low. My bet is the alternator is not doing its job.

Depends on how dead the battery is, thats why you need to start testing stuff out before ripping things out and replacing them. If a cell is dead in the battery, the car won't start.

That would work, for a while, if it is the alternator gone bad, it won't keep the battery charged causing it to die...

If you cant get it started with a jumper pack/or actually jumping the car then your battery is done. After you check and make sure the battery is good (probably isnt) you'll need to check how much volts the alternator is putting out, as stated 14v. Then from there i would recommend having it load tested using a VAT40.

so i checked my battery and it was good 12v. when i turned my ignition my battery power drops. so my alternator has to be bad. so i took of my starter and i got it rebuild. when i installed it i was still hearing the same grinding noise as before. so i called an uncle (mechanic) and i asked him if it was normal that my flywheel had play inside the transmission and i could turn it with my fingers, he said that my flywheel must of came off, and thats why the flywheel doesnt crank up the car it just grinds.

so my flywheel is loose and my uncle is going to drop the tranny to put the flywheel back in place.

i will fix my alternator after the flywheel issue.

No!

i push start my car ans it started, and after driving it for a few minutes the rattling (flywheel) went away. I shut the car off and start it back up and it did. But after a few times the rattling noise came back and the car didnt start anymore. But the power in the car keeps dying.

I ment when you put the volt meter on the battery.

I have heard of the ring gear coming off on cheaper style flywheels like the ACT that uses aluminum and steel which have different expansion rates. That sucks if thats what you figure out is the case in your situation. Otherwise someone didnt tourqe down the bolts correctly
