Default Removing head from my h22a4

I'm removing my head cause my engine blew up and after removing the cams I was removing the head I'm having an issue. I have not received the service manual in the mail yet but have enough knowledge to go as far as I have. not that I really know anything but I try.

What socket do I use to remove it? I tried a 14mm and it wont fit then a 15mm and it slips. What am I doing wrong besides not waiting for the service manual. Thanks in advance for your time...

I went and bought a 12point socket set and the 14mm socket worked this is why you wait for the service manual kids! That would have told me the bolt was a 12point not a 6 point. Moral of this WAIT FOR YOUR SERVICE MANUAL IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE IT BEFORE.

Stupid Berry!

That would be an unbelievably cheap socket set to have tolerances that bad! What brand is it?

You are correct, the H22A4 has 14mm 12 point bolt head on the head bolts. As you found, you can't use a 6 point socket to work.

The Prelude doesn't use any English sized bolts except the seat belt bolts.

IIRC, ARP head studs use a 9/16" 12 point nut, though. However, those obviously aren't Honda OEM.

You could be right. I can't remember. It's been 6 months or so since the last time I installed a head that used ARP studs. 9/16" is just a tad over 14mm, so if you used a 14mm, it's more than likely a 14mm 12 point nut.

I just keep putting different sockets until one works......it's what having a large toolset is good for.

If you're working with Honda's, you need a good set of Metric sockets and wrenches. You can basically strip an entire car using a 10, 12, 14, 17, and 19mm socket/wrench.

BTW, you'll need the 12 point sockets for the clutch and flywheel bolts as well.
