Default Whiny Accord

I have a 98 Accord EX which is producing a high-pitch whine in reverse when the car is in motion. If it is fully stopped, with my foot on the brake, it is not there. It sounds almost like an electrical versus a mechanical sound. Has anyone heard of this, or seen this before. Any help is greatly appreciated.

when you accelerate does the noise get louder? when you slow down, does it get quiter? if you stay at a constant speed, does the noise stay the same?

Are all the accessories off? i.e. radio, fan, wipers, etc?

If everything is off, and the noise is only there in reverse, then I believe its just the spur gears in the transmission.

Is your car automatic or manual? If its manual its probably the spur gear.

The car is an automatic. The noise level is pretty constant and does not increase in pitch or volume.

I have the same sound... It comes and goes, and it sounds like it might be coming from under the drivers side dash... For the life of me, I have been trying to pin point the noise, and no luck so far!... Other then the noise I have no issue with the car..

hojo.. I take it there is not problem with the car, other then this noise?

all hondas do that. its very normal. it has somthing to do with the teeth in the reverse gear being straight cut. makes a whine sound in reverse. the faster you go in reverse the louder the whine gets. my car does it everytime.

Cool! I'll check out the FAQ's on it . Glad to hear it is normal. I don't have any other problems other than that particular sound. In fact it runs great. Thanks guys for the peace of mind.
