I hear that those inspections are getting more strict. I'm not in your state so I have no idea how it works there but as far as I know in IL you need to show receipts for all the parts that were replaced especially on a theft recovery car.
sorry to hear dude, replace the hatch,i dont think you have to turn in the wing but at least now you know what has to be done
I hear ya man. I've heard some bitch-*** horror stories from our great NY Rebuilt inspectors. I understand their purpose but damn. I actually don't mind getting a rebuilt title car except for having to go through that damn inspection.
Did they do any "safety" inspections? Road-worthiness, etc? They're only supposed to be watchful for stolen parts.
<-- in for updates, because I may still end up in inspection someday
GL with everything.

NC State Inspection:
"Is your CEL on? No? Aight... Tint? Yes? Whatever... Uhhhhh... It got wheels? Yeap... Cool... Man I'm hungry... Got a cat? No? It don't matter... Aight, here's your sticker."
I'll make a point to never move to NY, that's absolutely insane.

LMAO!! I can see that conversation now! Nah, that's not how our general inspections/emissions go. This is a special inspection for trying to register Rebuilt Title car in NY from out of state. It supposedly has nothing to do with safety or road-worthiness....only that you can prove with VINs and receipts where all the bolt-on parts came from. Basically they assume you rebuilt the car with stolen parts until you can prove otherwise. And yeah, they can confiscate any undocumented parts that should have VIN tags/stickers. If it's the motor or tranny that's undocumented, they can seize the whole car.
There was a decent rebuilt 97R in Cali and one in Indiana that were getting my panties wet, but after learning all this NY ****......put the kielbasa to that idea.

Didn't you just read? Haha.
Let me give you an idea... I just passed inspection, on both of my cars.
Prelude:
- Bald tires
- Cracked windshield (Blocking driver's view)
- No brights
- No passenger turn signal
Type-R:
- Testpipe
- Bald Azenis
So yeah, it's pretty damn light around here. It also helps I have a shop that hooks it up.

Haha, yeap, that's what's up.
Surrounding areas of Wilmington are still pretty country, so going out to Leland or Castle Hayne, you'll find a shop that'll pass just about anything that isn't throwing a CEL.

Ive been through the NYS Theft Bureau salvage inspection too. Its not a fun process, I had to go 3 separate times, it was a huge pain in my ***, renting dollies, taking off work, etc. They never confiscated any of my parts though, just gave me a hard time about receipts and missing nuts/bolts. Not sure why they would fail you for an unpainted door...last time I was there cars were being brought in on flat beds by dealers with dented fenders, flat tires, etc, and they passed. It was obvious to me the NYS Theft Bureau is a crooked *** corrupt department and you are better off knowing someone in the department or being a dealer.

Even when brand-new OEM replacement parts do not have VIN stickers? That's bullshit

I am going to try and fight it because its the original deck lid. They should be able to tell from the bolts that it was never removed before. The factory seem sealer is still intact. They should only confiscate it only if they think is stolen. I'll try and talk to a supervisor on monday.

bolts were never touched....

This is what they are getting. I'm painting it and putting it on the deck...

This is from the ny state website. I don't know but i must be going crazy. It states if the inpector determines the part came from a valid source (original factory part) they will print u a vin tag for 25 bucks. Only if they determine its stolen they will confiscate it???? read to see if i'm going crazy...
Check for stolen vehicle parts. Frequently a person buys a vehicle part and does not know that the part was stolen. NYS law requires the DMV to confiscate a vehicle part if the DMV investigator determines during the examination that the vehicle part was stolen. The DMV can impound the complete vehicle if the stolen part is a major part like the engine or the transmission. If the complete vehicle is stolen, the DMV confiscates the vehicle and returns the vehicle to the legal owner.
Display the vehicle identification number (VIN). The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) requires manufacturers to attach VIN labels to specific parts of specific models of vehicles. If a label is damaged, absent or covered, the DMV can confiscate the part. If a manufacturer made a part on your vehicle that included a VIN label, make sure that the VIN label is attached, legible, not damaged and fully visible. If the DMV investigator determines that the part came from a valid source, the investigator can attach a replacement VIN label and will not confiscate the part. You must pay a total fee of $25 if the DMV attaches one or more VIN labels to the vehicle. Only facilities registered or licensed by the DMV can use a check to pay the fee. All other applicants must use a money order to pay the fee.
