Default Which transmission do I want?

So I took my car to a tranny swap and the guy said the bearings are going out and basically I need a new tranny. This will cost about 1300 for them to rebuild everything and labor. That is way too much money for my shitty car/transmission. Now, I look on craigslist and see some civic trannys but dont know which one is going to work. Are all the civic trannys swappable? They are mentioning D series, what is that? There is a D series LSD that sounds good but I have no idea if its compatible. BTW my car is a 97 lx. You guys wanna give me the rundown on what I can use? O yea, how can I find out what type of tranny I have? ie where is the stamping?

Thanks guys

you can use any 92-00 civic tranny on your motor. The most efficent tranny would be the z6/y8 tranny's. The z6 is off the 92-95 civic ex's and the y8 is off the 96-00 civic's

D series is referred to the code of the engine. Your car has a D series motor...therefore you can use pretty much any d series tranny. Just get a nice cheap one that works if your not really looking for performance

Wow that is totally what I wanted to hear. Oddly enough the tranny is one of the things id like to improve. I plan on going into the mountains and think an lsd would be really beneficial.

How much does a good short throw shifter cost for these cars? Whats involved in installing them?

One other thing the guys at the shop said is that these trannys arent ment to be shifted quickly. He says it wears out the synchros prematurely.

As far as performance is concerned what do i want? I did a little research and it looks like a limited slip is too pricey for this. Also the one i saw for sale is a phantom grip which im hearing mixed things about.

might wanna be more specific about that

<TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by lazii_boi08 &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">if he where to use a EG tranny on the EK would that make a bad difference what i mean like would it slow the car down or anythang or does the ek and then eg tranny both have the same potental???</TD></TR></TABLE>

eg and ek are chassis codes. trim levels have different tranny's with different gear ratios.

if your looking for performance...forget the tranny. Save for a swap. If your budget is tight. Get a B16.

EDIT: B16 is a type of honda engine. Its a dual cam instead of a single like the D series. It also has VTEC. This engine is found in various cars in Japan during the 90's. In the US its in two cars. The Del Sol and the Civic SI 99-00 aka EM1

Um, yes. They did. The gearing actually varies more within d-series transmissions than the b-series lineup. As far as hydrolic clutch transmissions go.

The biggest difference between 92-95 and 96-00 are the folk in the 96-00 are not aluminum.

92-95 EX/Si:
1st: 3.250
2nd: 1.900
3rd: 1.250
4th: 0.909
5th: 0.702 or 0.750
R: 3.153
FD: 4.250

96-00 EX:
1st: 3.250
2nd: 1.909
3rd: 1.250
4th: 0.909
5th: 0.702
R: 3.153
FD: 4.250

The difference in gearing is negligible unless you get the 0.750 5th in a 5g Si transmission.

The 5g transmissions had aluminum forks that break, and the 6g transmissions had steel forks that bend and sometimes take **** down with them.

Choose your poison.

And what would you propose we make shift forks out of? I've never heard of problems with the steel forks.

I don't think it's a common enough issue for it to really be a deciding factor.

It took me about 3 hours to replace the d-series tranny I got for $200.

All I mean is you don't hear about the shift forks bending/breaking much. I think just hardcore street punks and serious trackday civics are more likely the one's to encounter an issue. Normal driving the shift fork should last plenty long enough.

And I didn't find that link very handy. All it showed was that some people (about half) preferred the 92-95 transmission.

Being that most honda guys (I think) are 5th gen owners you'd have to take that into consideration.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Under most conditions, you will not have to worry about the forks. If one bends or breaks, replacing the transmission is probably your best option.

About the link not being "very handy"... yes, there is a lot of **** to sort through. I thought about copying and pasting only the relevant information, but that's too much work. :-P

As far as which one is better... I would use either one.

I've heard that the gearing for the 92-95 EX/Si and 96-00 EX transmissions were the same, so I'm not sure. The chart I posted was from Hondaswap. Now I'm curious.

Can anybody confirm whether the 5g EX/Si has a 1.900 or 1.909 2nd?

If you read my first post in this thread, you'll see that I know this already.

I'd still like to know out of curiosity.
