Metal cages on bearings, how to order them???
Is there a way to order replecement bearings from Honda and guarantee I get the metal caged ones. I have a tranny out of a 91 CRX -DX I am putting new bearings into to be installed into my 90 STD, I got the tranny for the price of my 4-spd shift ****...lol...But I want to get all metal caged bearings instead of the plastic ones, if possible. Does anybody know how I can get metal cages only, like ordering by a make and model from a certain year. Thanks for the help guys...I searched "metal", "cages", and "bearings" and didn't find anything. I also posted this in D-series.org but figured someone might know here...I work for a private Honda/Acura garage and we order through our local dealer, it's just easier on the parts guy when I can give him a year and model car that he can order parts for.
Thanks,
Thanks,

I'm not sure what you mean- if i'm way off base please excuse me.</TD></TR></TABLE>
I was wanting to replace the five bearings on the main and counter shafts, but it seems sometimes you get plastic races in the bearings and sometimes you end up with metal ones...You are right on track. When i ordered my last set form Honda I asked to get bearings for a 95 Del-Sol SI, and they had plastic cages in them, My tech buddy replaced his in his 94 DX, and he ended up with metal ones...Go figure...

Does your friend no longer have the packaging that his bearings came in? That would have the Honda part numbers on them? </TD></TR></TABLE>
Naw, this was a few years ago...I am sure in time Mista Bone will run across this...and let me know if/what the secret is...

They 96-00 40mm diff bearings were also metal caged, but Honda has went back to the shielded 92-95 style with the 96-00 PS1 part number.</TD></TR></TABLE>.
Thanks so much man, I knew you would know the deal...

So are the metal ones any better then the plastic "shielded" ones? Whatever you recommend I will purchase...I was told by some old Honda techs not to worry about the diff carriers. Your thoughts...

as long as you keep fluid at proper level, the bearing cages won't matter.
Heat is what kills a bearing when it runs dry.
I know I have a steel caged small ISB in stock, next parts order I'm gonna start buying the other less replaced bearings, I want to have one of each (2 of the diff) each on hand.
Either for sale, or to use in the trannys I build. Right now most of my profit is going to building parts supply.

OH said so well....I accidentally forgot to fill my first engine swap with a 95 Del-Sol SI into my 94-CX, ran awesome and after 2 days of just back and forth to work I rememberd what I didn't do was top off my trans, it was whining badly......It was explained after I removed the tranny and found chunks of plastic everywhere...Started to see it after I removed the axles, then really found it when I removed the case cover.

One more question Mista Bone,
The techs I work with said the two top bearings for the countershaft feel fine, but have @240K on them, would you replace them anyway since I have the tranny apart. Lastly...the snap ring/retaining ring that sits in the groove in the top bearing of the couintershaft felt really weak when I opened it to release the cover. Do you ever replace that ring...?

if this is the tranny that was ran dry, I'd replace all 7 MAJOR bearings and inspect the 5 roller bearing under the gears, along with flushing the shafts out. Plastic from the cages get EVERYWHERE, including behind the oil plates.
The only tim I replace the lock ring is when it gets mangled, like when the outer CS bearing locks up and spins the lock ring
like this......was not possible to release the lock ring......

Naw, this one just had major whining and has 240K on it...Once we got it open and apart, the MSB and CSB(roller style?) the worse was the MSB nest to the seal, OMGosh it was worn, all plastic cages were ok...

We replace the lock ring no matter what. They are only a couple of bucks
Like Bone said as long as you have the right amount of fluid in the trans..the bearings make no difference.
When there is no oil in the trans its whether or not you want welded bearings or melted plastic coated ones...the choice is yours
