Default DIY Tricks to Make a Sohc Quick

I've been looking for any tricks what-so-ever to make a single cam d16y7 a bit quicker.
I've done the dizzy adjustment but that can't be the only thing can it?

an EX tranny will bolt up no problem, the shorter gearded trans will give you better acceleration.............everyone else will tell you don't waste your money.... boost it....or do a mini-me.......search the FAQ's at the top for info on the mini-me if you're interested......

nit pickers might suggest.....weight reduction(flammers- "drop a couple pounds...yea you not your car")......remove ps/ac...underdrive pulleys.....lighter flywheel, tune up/tune....etc..........i say save for a swap and/or boost

Don't respond to this thread just let it die, no one on here really appreciates these questions

Yeah, the EX tranny swap, along with a lighter flywheel (not tooo light.. ask the guy at the shop for guidance) and a slight (stage1) clutch upgrade will make you dig this car all over again. I threw in a short shifter with mine while I was down there and I'm loving the setup thus far. Getting ready to do the mini me head swap.. everything I've read says it's a good cheap way to bump it up. Cams are something you'll want to look at as well. Maybe some head work before you put it in.

For your situation, I'd look at d-series.org also. There are a lot of people on honda-tech that offer really helpful advice, but most people are into what you can do with a b, k or h-series engine swap (which you shouldn't rule out, depending on your cash flow situation/hp and torque goals, etc)

I can appreciate your situation because I'm in the same boat. Good luck, bro.

add a turbo.
you can fashion one out of a sea shell and a used boat propeller.

any DIY changes will be minimal...seriously...

maybe a small t3 tubro, cast mani, ebay fmic, dsm 450's, and a basemap on a chipped ecu is up your alley?

its pretty easy to build a mild n/a setup or go the f/i route, really it all depends on what you want. either way that ex tranny swap is the 1st thing i'd do. as mentioned earlier u can goto d-series.org and search there are quite a few people who have y7 builds going on myself included.

screw the head swap, you have to either swap tranny or boost or both

ex tranny, y8 intake mani, ebay header. past that, any extra money should be put into suspension, IMO...

The y8 intake manifold does make a difference, your getting more power out of your intake manifold because it is larger

I have the y8 manifold sitting in my garage but I need to find a sensor that only came with the ex. Already did suspension work, slammed 4 inches all around on Tein S techs.

Can you see the difference in the gear length between the y8 and 7?

weight reduction.... swap the ex tranny wont make your car go any faster...header or exhaust wont make your car go any faster without proper engine tuned.. boost it ..is the only way to gain power.
i had a z6 with ex manual tranny..header to exhaust..intake.....it is still slow

Yeah it is a difference because if im not mistaken a y7 has longer gears than a y8, a y7 tranny would be good for boost. A y8 tranny has nice short gears

Last time I checked lowering your car dramaticly, a strutbar in the front and one in the back was plenty to keep your tires on the floor.

Lowering your car dramatically without sufficient shocks makes it pointless.

yeah it is for handling..
u were asking how to make your car go faster..u were not asking how to make your car handle better
and also how much are u looking to spend on this "make a car go quick" ?

From reading and all, I'd say...

y8 intake manifold

then boost.

That's the "quick" way to make power with the D series.

yeah boost is pretty much the only thing that will help a d series, otherwise you'll be wasting your money (and lots of it) to build a quick NA d series car.

Go with an EX trans, and save your money about the other stuff. Just get a decent header and a more aggressive camshaft - chip an OBD-I ECU and get it tuned. Other than that, it's not really gonna be nothing quick w/o turbo or a serious NA build.

Or by spending all that money he would have put into the D16 and purchase a B18b1
