Default Thermostat/Radiator Combo???

Hi, i was just wondering what exactly an aftermarket thermostat and radiator cap do. I know they cool down the engine and stuff, but how does it help the car directly? Is it a mod that is worth it? And if you purchase the two, do you need the thermostat switch as well? Is it just bolt-on? Any info appreciated.

theres a thermo stat switch? you mean fan switch? I have no idea what the fan switch does (chime in anyone please! ) ...

but the thermostat with a lower temp would allow the coolant in earlier than with a stock thermo (depends what you get)

the rad cap i dunno.

The Fan switch as far as i know, which is a thermoswitch. This is the little thing that turns your fan on and off,An aftermarket thermoswitchs resistance to heat is lowered. So it basically switches the fan on sooner, instead of waiting till it's too hot.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

Pretty simple actually, the fan switch turns the fan on. Aftermarket switches like the Spoon, have a lower temp rating for the fan to switch on.

the rad cap i dunno.
It's perfectly useless unless you like novelty items or ran out of Spoon or Mugen parts to buy.

Basically, it prevents the coolant mixture from boiling if the coolant temperatures ever get that high for it to boil. It's a near impossibility unless you're endurance racing, and even more impossible if you're also running a race radiator (ie: Spoon, C&R, or Fluidyne). It's probably commonly also known as a waste of money unless you fall into one of the two categories above.

As a side note, thermostats and thermoswitches do nothing to help prevent boiling coolant b/c you're already way past the point of their engineered benefit towards engine cooling.
