Default Urgent Aftermarket Exhuast Question

Hey everyone, I purchased an ebay exhaust a while ago. It's made by Tenrai, it's very good, but very loud. Even with the silencer in the muffler it is way too loud. See, I leave for work at 3:50AM, while my neighbors are still sleeping. Apparently they've talked to my father about it and they can't stand how noisy the car is. Anyone got any ideas? Is there somewhere I can buy a much quieter silencer? I need to get this thing quiet so that I can drive my car again. Thanks for the help!

ive never seen a quieter silencer... but it is possible to drive the car quieter... now i dont know your exact parking situation, but if theres a way to have your car facing the direction you need to travel, and just let the clutch out smooth NO GAS, just clutch, very slow (assuming your car is a 5spd), you'll idle away real smooh and quiet....

the only other option is get a crap load of cotton ***** and stuff em in there every morning....

Hey thanks everyone, I really appreciate it. I already drive it real easy in the mornings, but I suppose I could just let off gas and brake an coast. I have an auto, so it wouldn't be hard at all. Maybe I'll try it some this evening. Cool thanks! I'll check into the muffler shop too, that would be most excellent if they could do that!

yea, it should be fairly quick and inexpensive for them to cut out a section of your pipe and weld in the resonator. if you want, you can even have them fab up flanges and you can remove the resonator and replace with straight pipe again whenever you want, but that will cost more $. you can pick up a great quality resonator for pretty cheap from magnaflow, or if your really strapped on cash, autozone or any other autoparts store should have some cherry bomb resonators for about $20-$40

o yea, one more question. your exhaust, is it a axle back or full cat-back?

You better be getting paid well to go to work that early. A resonator would be a fairly cheap solution, but it will still probably be pretty loud. An exhaust such as the Apexi WS2 or RS*R ExMag would sound way better, be much quiter, and I'm sure it will give you a gain over your current setup.

Put a new muffler on and just weld in place of this one or have a resonator or two if 1 doesn't quiet it down enough put on like they said.

Hey thanks for the responses everyone. See, I like my neighbors even if they don't like me, so I'll do pretty much anything within reason to fix this problem.
A friend told me that if I put a few pieces of steel wool in there, that may quiet it down? What do you think. Here's what I was thinking. I take out the silencer line the tip with some steel wool, and then stick the silencer back in to kind of secure everything, and to keep the steel wool from going too far into the muffler.
I would just get a new muffler, but as soon as I get a "real" job, 9-5 etc. etc. (Not to say that what I do isn't a real job, but whatever) just something that I don't have to wake up at 3:00AM, then I'm pulling out all the stops, this thing will be LOUD, so I want to keep it fairy reversible to what I have now. Although the neighbors may not like it, I do.

der da der...

steel wool will just clog up your muffler and restrict the flow you've created by putting an aftermarket exhaust... that just seems pointless to me...

i agree on the resonator.

Youre telling me you cant baby the rpms until you get out of your community? Shifting at low rpms should get out you of the gear before the exhaust starts getting too loud. Thats one solution. A Resonator is another that would get rid of alot of the noise.

Hey thanks again for the responses. See I really do baby the RPMs as you said. The funny thing about this is that the exhaust is VERY low and deep so the sound bounces off of EVERYTHING! And I think the low sound is what is causing my neighbors to complain. Low sounds carry better than high sounds. I think the low sounds are just going straight through their walls and waking them up. As far as the other houses outside my neighborhood, I'm not concerned so much mainly because I'm moving fast enough so that they aren't exposed to it for more than 5 seconds or so. It's only noisy when I'm taking off from a standstill otherwise it's not noisy at all because I get it up to speed and then pretty much coast it's not like a constant throttle if that makes any sense? Thanks again everyone, sounds like the general consensus is another resonator.

Im curios to hear this exhaust. Can you post a sound clip? But anyways, that make good sense, especially since exhausts seem to be 10 times louder at night anyway. Good luck with your problem and keep us posted.

I suppose I could take some video or something. See, I don't think it's that loud. My Dad says it doesn't sound loud at all IN the car, but once you're behind the car it really is loud. On a side note, I just saw the ad for the new 2008 Accord on the top of this page, it looks cool! Thanks again everyone for the help. I still don't know what I'll do.

Hey everyone, I went to a muffler shop and told them my situation. The guy said I should stick with an after market muffler because then I wouldn't have to put a completely new OEM system on. I need a muffler with a 2.25" inlet, and an oval shape. I looked on Magnaflow and found a few candidates and thought I'd run them past the pros. I'm looking for fairly quiet, so I don't wake anyone up, but if I step on it I want it to sound loud and awesome so here's what I thought...

http://www.magnaflow.com/02pro...d=462
I'm kinda leaning into this one because it has the dual outlets and they're 2" so I'm thinking that will give more back pressure, and thus be quieter

http://www.magnaflow.com/02pro...d=468
This one is cool because it's got the 2.25" on each side, but I'm sure that will be louder

http://www.magnaflow.com/02pro...d=563
This one is a whole lot cheaper and uses some 3 chamber system that I think may be quieter, it's under the Turbo XL compact universal muffler if you want to see what the diagram looks like.

All by Magnaflow, what does everyone think? Thanks for the help everyone!

whats with you and the dual outlet/tip? get a GReddy SP2 and your good to go. very quiet at low RPMs with a refined sound to it, and opens up nicely at high RPMs.

Those to me look more like mufflers I'd put on my truck. They may be for cars though just look like ones I've seen on trucks to me.
