Fuel system too rich or lean .... what to do?
I have a 96 cx as a 'beater' to get me around the city and park werever. I wasent driving it much during the summer and i am now needing it. It was taking tons of gas for the past year and finally decided to fix it. It was a cracked manifold i changed that and the gas consumption seems fine now (450km a tank) but the check engine came back a couple days ago with the ' fuel system too rich or lean'....what is this caused by? The car has new plugs and i actually put a bottle of injector cleaner in the tank of gas that i am running now....???
I was thinking the primary o2 sensor, but i figure if its seeing lean or rich its because its working properly...no???
any clues guys?
thanks
Mark

actually if the o2 sensor goes out, then the motor will run lean or rich. it is unable to send the proper messages to the ecu. i suggest replacing both of them, that way you won't come across this problem with the seconadry o2 sensor.

both sensors?
isnt that a bit excessive ?
I'm thinking maybe just the precat since the post cat has absolutely nothing to do with A/f's ...its only there to verify if the catalic converter is proper?!
thanks guys

you are correct about the cat, but i wouldn't rule out that it could be part of your problem. replace the first one, see if it makes a difference, then replace the second one if need be.

If your MAP sensor is broken, (rarely the case), it wouldnt send the correct signal to the ECU, which in turn would cause it to put in too much fuel. But you would know about this beforehand, 1.) from a CEL, 2.) really poor gas mileage.

the map sensor should be located on top of the throttle body.
