Problems with Coilovers?
I ordered slip over coilovers for my 01 civic EX. I called a race shop to have them installed rather than go through the hassle myself. They told me they don't install slip over coilovers on the 01-UP, becuase the shocks has a tie rod connected to it. So they would not even quote me a price. Does anyone else know of this issue? Should i consider buying different coilovers or just use the ones I have? Would it hurt the car to put them on?
There is some DIY information out there on replacing springs and don't include anything of what your referring to i don't believe. I think the only thing its connected to is the hub and steering arm but its just two bolts. Sounds like they don't know what they are talking about anyways. (corrected below, the tie rod is connected to it but still a stupid reason for them to not do it IMO)
A coilover is a coilover, all of them have to be installed the same. No it wont hurt the car inless you put them on stock struts and lower it really low which would in time blow out the strut. If your looking to go about 1.5-2" lower it shouldn't wear them out too quickly but you might want to consider getting some aftermarket ones soon and you will need a camber kit to straighten the tires up after going that low.

Your front strut assembly is connected to your Tie Rod... as far as why your shop won't do it, I'm not quite sure. But it's really not a hard process at all to DIY.

Yeah forgot about that...maybe its me that don't know.. lol but its still a stupid reason not to put on coilovers! lol I guess Im used to the tie rods going to the spindle on cars (needless to say I havn't lowerd my car YET, but will be in the next week or so hopefully!)
Back to the subject, yeah it shouldn't be hard to do as long as you have the patience, time and proper tools you should be able to do it no problem.

I just did my springs the other weekend... a spring compressor is not neccesary, if I would have had one I would have used it but if you have follow the guys direction on that link when taking it apart (loosening*not removing* the strut assembly before you take it out of the car) and if you have an extra set of hands when putting in back together, you should have no problems. The front you need to have someone put weight on the spring while someone threads the nut on... done deal.
