i got a 2000 civic si and a 98 eclipse gst. i gotta sell one of them, but idk which to sell. neither have anything wrong with them. the civic has 113k and the eclipse has 67k. i like how quick the eclipse is, but thats the only thing better i like about the eclipse. i was thinkin of keeping the civic and swappin a h22a engine into it cuz the body on the car is flawless. any suggestions on which i should keep, and if the civic what engine would be the best to swap into it? thanks

since this is a honda forum I'm naturally going to say keep the SI...especially if you're going to possibly swap in an h22. And if the gst has the stock 7 bolt then you could be looking at crankwalk later on. just a thought. it's not definitate but i'd choose reliability.

 

well we all know the reliabilty issues with the dsm's. the second gen 7 bolt crank walk. shitty transmissions and rear ends. having to give john sheapard ur life savings to get the drive train in good enough shape to have fun with the car. i would have a dsm if i could afford to fix it every day lol. theyre fast dont get me wrong. but imo boost the b16 and have a dependable (or more so than an eclipse) engine. maybe even put down a gst or two.

i own both an ls swaped hatch and a 2.3 stroked, bored, big turbo 8fuel injector, eclipse and i vote keep the civic if you plan on modding and the eclipse if you want it to be dead stock my eclipse has had like 3 catastrophic failures 2 motors and one tranny the olny reason i keep it is i have so much money sunk that i will never get back.( for honda reliability)

 

definatley keep the si in m opinion. the gst is a fun car though.

 

DCsportEJ1Civic, Keep in mind the GS-T is a FWD based 4g63, so the rear end doesn't matter, and I don't believe the FWD transmission has as many problems, mainly because they generally don't get as much traction as the AWD tranny, so it's not being put through as much stress.

IMO, I'd keep the DSM, but I love boost.

 

lol true, i guess i got carried away. but non the less the dsm's engine and trans are problematic. the fwd and awd trannys arent that much differant. and they both are ****. the only time i can say i had fun with a shitty awd dsm is when we out dummy axles in the front of my freinds 1g and put 240 hp to the rears, then actually tried to drive it. and boost yes. thats why i said boost the civic. the unless you get a 6 bolt first gen motor, eliminate the balancer shafts and have shep or busher build the trans the car will fall apart. which is why i vote for the civic.

 

I'd keep the eclipse, I had one (GSX), LOVED it, AWD - Turbo. Only problem with it is OEM parts cost a ****-ton.

I'm not sure which year(s) eclipses had the crank walk, but I'm pretty sure the story goes if it doesn't happen by 100k, it won't happen. So I'd look into that first, to see if the GS-T is going to cause you some more problems later down the road. Though I'd still probably take the GS-T .

 

Just throwing it out there, the 7-bolt motors started right around the third week of april, 92. So the early 92 models had the 6-bolt, but midway through april, the 7 bolt began. I wouldn't know this except that I have one sitting on jackstands in the driveway that has a 7 bolt from the third week of april.

Either way thogh, he'll still have FWD, so I couldn't really pick between the two if modding was going to cost about the same...but I'm not brand partial lol.

 

I own both a Teg and a Talon turbo AWD. I'm thinking about getting rid of one too. I would definitely part with the Talon before I sell my Teg. My Talon is a lot faster than my Teg but prone to endless mechanical problems. I'm close to having replaced every mechanical part on the car. $3000 to rebuild transmission, two sets of front control arms, the list goes on. On the other hand I personally rebuilt the 4G63 engine myself 40,000 miles ago and have not had a problem with it since. But keep in mind I have sufficient fuel delivery, a good tune and don't boost past my engine's limitations or my turbo's efficiency range.

My opinion on crankwalk is that it occurs much less often than people think. I have known many DSMers and only one has lost a block to this. If you don't launch at 5000 rpms everyday, if you have a automatic trans, if you are still close to stock power, then your chances of crankwalk diminish.

Having said that, you are probably still looking at drivetrain and suspension issues in the future.

My Teg has had little to no mechanical probs since I owned it. Even when I do encounter a prob the repair and parts are much cheaper than doing the same thing to the Talon.

If you have a big bank roll on demand and don't need reliable transportation then keep the GST.

If you need a reliable vehicle and your funds are limited then keep the SI.

 

if thats a second gen talon those front control arms are re-called. my ex got hers replaced at the dealership for free last year.

 

Too bad they only replace them once for free.

Keep the Si, you have a very nice, reliable car, that gets good gas mileage. What more could you want. One of my fav cars.

sell the DSM!!! Alot of my friends have DSM's, when i have to ride with them i always make sure my cell phone is fully charged and i have a pair of comfortable walking shoes.

I own both as well, only my dsm is awd. In my opinion DSM's can be just as reliable as any other car with proper maintenance.

Um why?

h22 is great. With the b-series already in it it makes for a super cheap candidate for an h2b swap. You could put your car into the 13's rather cheaply and still have a stock motor.
