Default ECU timing advance???

I was wondering it the ECU advance the timing on an OBD1 B series? I am trying to set the timing with a timing light, and when the light says its right in time, the car runs like ***. I was wondering if I am supposed to unplug one of the 2 plugs that goes to the distributor, and then get it in time with the timing light?? Thanks for the help. If you dont know what im talking about dont post a dumb *** answer please.

The motor is a ls/v-tec, obd-1 with a bunch of bolt ons.

Jump it. Start engine. Set timing. Turn engine off. Remove jumper.
