Default hello all (some new turbo questions.)

well i have been a member for a while now and have not realy been in the fi forum. but now i have a few questions.
i have a 96 civic with a 96 gsr. all stock.
i am looking now to get into FI but would like to know where to start.
my goals are to reach 300whp on around 7-9 pounds of boost.
i want to keep it safe and reliable.
i need to know what are the best cams, camshafts, header, what size turbo, what kind of intercooler if it matters,if i can stick with the oem pistons, what type of throttle body, wat type of intake manifold. and what else i need to reach my goal of 300whp.
any help will be appreciated thanks
and for tuning iam thinking chrome.
and i will be converting to obd1 soon

the best turbo for you would be a gt28rs with a .63 a/r hot size, if budget doesnt allow, then a 50 trim with a .63 a/r hot side.

your stock motor will be fine if its healthy. stock cams, stock intake manifold, stock throttle body. gonna need a new clutch, we like the competition clutches.

glad to see you bring up tuning because its the most important part. crome will do fine, i like hondata, and neptune

the one you linked on ebay is not a gt28rs, it is a knock off.

we sell them, and we only carry real Garrett turbochargers.

judging by your interest in the cheapest ebay has to offer i would suggest the 50 trim. its 599 shipped.

that intercooler might work.....

althought they arent the most efficient and i dont really suggest it, it seems a lot of people have decent luck with ebay intercoooelers, not many have problems with them leaking or anything, so if you are on a really tight budget it could work.

The GT28RS is a good turbo, and yes, it could work for a GS-R, though for the cost of the turbo ($1175 or so) + Water lines and fitting kit (about $150-$200) - that's about $1325-$1375 just in the turbo alone. OR, you can get a GT32 series turbo, a manifold, and a TiAL wastegate for $1350.

Not sure what your total budget is, but that sounds a bit more cost effective to me.

I'm sure Schisterr66 or someone else has his dyno still ..

the gt28rs and the gt32xx turbos are in a completely different class. the gt28rs would spool 1000rpms faster than the gt3255 spools.

what are the advantages of the gt3255 over a typical t3/t04e 50 or 57 trim.

I dont think that Mac or I have anything against the GT28rs at all....its a simple matter of cost vs benefit and when you're on a budget, which more than half of the people building setups are, you need to make smart decisions. Yeah, i could have gotten a GT28rs, but the turbo itself would have cost as much as my manifold, dp, dump, turbo and wastegate. To me, it just isnt worth it.

As for the differences between the GT3255 and a 57 trim, i'll let The Shodan explain. I can say from personal experience w/ a 60 trim that it spools a full 1000 rpm faster and makes more power for the boost level, but the setups were slightly different so it isn't a clear comparison. I'd gladly toss a 50 or 57 trim on my setup and test it vs what i have if you want to send me one...until then, we have to base everything off the data gathered thus far. Also, if it didnt perform better, do you think Mac would sell them in lieu of a 57 trim?

wow you are stretching to make this arguement for the gt32xx, you can buy a gt3255b, manifold, downpipe, dumptube and wastegate for 1125? i guess its possible on ebay......

i know you said that it isnt a clear comparison, but judging by your old graphs its obvious that the manifold played a huge role on spool times on your 60 trim. when comparing the log manifold with a 60 trim vs the shorty manifold with gt3255b it seems more like a 100rpm difference rather than 1000rpm.

the facts are all there in your graph comparisons

and that gsr looks far from stock.
i want to know how to get to 300whp the most reliable way i want to know what i need to get to my goal under 9 pounds of boost.
thanks

Anything additive like this is going to put the internals to work like anything else. It is your responsibility as an owner to make sure that the motor itself has been well-maintained, and well-cared for, as well as ensuring that the installation of whichever you decide to use is complete and uses quality materials. Tuning is of paramount importance, so use something that is multi-supportable, and cost effective that can be tuned by a professional. If this is your only mode of transportation, now is not the time to learn totally on your own. Some say that is speculative, but whatever.... Those areas, more than any particular turbo, are going to help ensure that you have a long lasting, usable, and enjoyable setup for years to come.

for all general purposed 300whp is 300whp. doesnt matter if its 9psi, or 12 assuming the turbo isnt pushing out a lot of hot air aka way past its efficiency.

so if you have to push 10-11psi it will be just as safe with a good tune.

Shodan came up with the GT3255 for people like you. People who want 300whp at low boost levels. (around 10psi) The GT3255 is a LOW boost turbo. IF you really crank up the boost (18psi+) it will not like it and you could have some problems. If you were going to run the high boost levels then this would not be a good choice.

If you took at looks at the first link you can see what is done to the car. The MOTOR is BONE stock!! There are some boltons that can be seen. Schister66 would have to tell you exactly what those were.

Has this helped you at all?? If you have any more questions just ask.
