Default Tranny clunking sound questions

Has anyone experineced a slight clunking sound from the tranny when taking off from 1st gear, even at low speed? I can also hear it sometimes during quick deceleration and back on gas again. I tried to locate the sound by manually rotating the CV shafts and noticed there are some free play inside the tranny, and follow by a clunk sound If the shafts continue to rotate. It sounded like the gears are finally enaged. It sure sounded like the clunk noise that I heard but not sure...

The CV shafts are new and I didn't see any problem on the splines inside the tranny during the installation. The tranny has new Honda MTF and no other problems. I'm about to drop the tranny to install new clutch and flywheel. Is there anything I should check or adjust while I have the tranny out? How much free play is normal? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What kind of free play are you talking about?

There are many things that could go wrong inside the trans that would cause a clunk like that. None of which you could check without disassembling the trans case.

That is fine, thats just the diff having some room to move.

I don't think your gear clunk is related to that noise at all, from what I can tell that is completely normal.

no matt, i mean i dont like driving in first gear cuz it hits 4-5k rpm very fast and i have a no name header that likes to scream.

oh and mine doesnt sound like that, mine is a lot lighter and doesnt happen all the time.

if i really get on it, it doesnt make a sound.. if i drive slowly like parking gear then ya itll make a light clunk noise. someone told me it might be my clutch/pressure plate

It's good to hear that particular sound is normal. I just double checked the cv joints and they are fine. Oh well, I wonder what else could it be...

I have a clunk when i shift, usually in lower gears, but only then, not while in gear. Are your motor mounts good?

I don't have the sound while in other gears either, other than occasionally during quick deceleration and back on the gas again. It sounded like a worn out u-joint. Front and rear motor mounts are brand new. The driver side and tranny mounts are still good. It's more noticeable in a parking garage.
