what makes an 89 crx si some much heavier than a crx hf ?

what parts could i could take out to make it lighter ?

1989 Honda CRX HF MT 1834 (should be around that weight)
1989 Honda CRX Si MT 2138

where does the extra 304 lbs come from ?

 

Beefier front and rear bumper supports, door impact beams, door-mounted seat belts, floor pan reinforcements, rear sway bar and associated bracketry, larger front sway bar, a rear wiper, a rear storage compartment, larger wheels and tires, a sunroof with associated rails and electric components, a passenger side mirror, a dead pedal, larger front brake components and axles, heavier seats, heavier engine and manifolds, more sound deadening material, larger fuel tank - among other miscellaneous items.

Some of those items cannot be removed, and others are important to performance and/or safety/integrity.

 

if only you could show the difference of weight on those individual components. i'd be swapping some HF stuff over to my si for sure.

 

so would it be better (worth it) if i left my SI project and started looking for an HF ?

 

the stuff that makes it heavier is what we need for safety

and si are not a lot a lot heavier only 250 lbs more

hf is light for 2nd generation

but 1st generation is lighter

So you can street race? No.

If you're using it for an auto-x or drag car, then by all means, yes.

250 pounds would be about .25 sec off 1/4 mile time. which means something to me

 

if its gonna be street driven who cares about the extra weight it'll help you stay alive when a dumbass hits the road.

 

If its strictly for track use then the HF would be the way to go.

no i was thinking about selling my si project and start looking for an hf project but i dont know if i want to get into more work. i think 2 tenths is a good amount time to save.

 

Is the only purpose of the car to drag race?

well i want it to be a street / drag car

 

if your going to get an hf then keep the si for parts. unless you want to keep the hf engine in there and the twig like axels and the smaller breaks. get the hf and swap the important stuff over from the si then get rid of the si. my .02

look for an 88-89 that doesnt have the seatbelts in the door for the maximum savings.

its not just .25 on the 1/4, all handling and every aspect of the car is affected first by its weight.

plus the doors look a bit better with the thinner door sashes, changes the profile of the car a bit, more like the jdm counterparts.

of course, my opinion is a bit skewed.

if its strictly for drag, then just worry about making power.

Don't think for a minute that we all don't understand that.

You have to realize that there is a point of diminishing returns on the investment.

i was just sharing with the OP since he only mentioned the raw quater mile estimate, and perhaps it hadn't occured to him!

for what he was saying its probably a better idea from a money aspect to spend more on the motor and he wont notice the difference, was basically my point.

 

A turbo doesn't take weight into consideration when its blowing

 

hf's are nice, but if your that worried about 250pounds, go on a diet!! and then start shedding some weight off the car....

 

Honda was so fanatical about the weight savings on the hf's that alot of the bolts are a couple of threads shorter.....

 

i would just keep the si

the si has a light in the ashtray and cig lighter socket, the hf doesnt. weight savings there!

 

If you want speed, just add lite.
If you want fast buy a supra.
