Default H23 Timing Issues...

So I was replacing my cousins headgasket I asked a couple Qs? and all I did was get flamed by HT's finest *** hats.

So now I am seeking help I have the helms manual for the job my problem is getting the cams at TDC.

I turn the flywheel where the cross is in the middle of the 2 little lines and the #1 piston is at TDC.

Oil Pump is at TDC the line on the left is even with the mark on the block.

Exhaust Cam arrow is pointing straigt up.

Intake Cam is pointing 1 or 2 teeth to the left of TDC. When I pry the cam over a couple teeth it comes back.

I have the timing belt on but I want to get it right the first time and not do it again. Thanks guys please help me out quick.

You just have the get the gear straight and slip the belt on over it, there is no better way of doing it.

Get a friend to hold the prybar while you work the belt.

If you have to you can sometimes just get the belt on slightly and then turn the cam by the 14mm bolt, just pop it real hard/short to get the thing to jump how ever many teeth you need. Don't do that unless you have to though.

Here's how I do it:

Don't worry about the oil pump.

Get the belt on the crank and water pump first, then do the exhaust cam that way you have the free spinning water pump to help get the tension loose for the intake cam. Do the exhaust cam first after the crank and water pump...use a 12mm wrench to turn it if you need to to get the teeth to line up and keep the belt tight. Then do the intake cam..if the belt is tight on the exhaust side to the crank you will have the maximum slack for the inatke cam. You should be able to slide it onto the intake cam now....if not pull up on the tensioner with a coat hanger or something like that tht will fit in the hole to loosen it further and put a 10mm bolt in the spot on the tensioner to hold it tight. Then you shouldn't have a problem.

Then double check the timing with the flywheel and if you are off a tooth or whatever use a marker to mark on the belt near the cam gears where you want it to be and try again if you need to.

I thought when the hole where the 10 mm goes down the belt loosens.... cause I just push it down.

Alright guys, I dont get it...We have the motor all back together, If i do say so my self timing was a bitch once you understand the ways of doing it comes all to play. So to me timing is all correct, both arrows pointing straight up both center lines perfect checked with a ruler from cam gear to cam gear. Oil Pump is dead on with marks on the oil pump housing on the left checked with short ruler. Crank Key is straight up, cross on flywheel is in the middle of the 2 piks. So to my guessing it seems the timing is good but unfortunately we dont have a timing gun.

Next thing is everything is back together new gaskets and everything.

Crank crank No go. Looked over a couple things. '

Aha culprit disconnected Thermostat ground.

Connected back and still just cranking.

I pull the hose from the Fuel Pressure Regulator and turn it on. It spurted fuel for about a second .

I pull the coil wire from the coil pack and hold closely, crank crank no turn.

I pull Spark Plug wire #1, Put a screw driver and place next to a bolt on the dizzy, no spark whats ever move it over to the a bolt on the valve cover and nothing!

I doubled checked engine harness plugs into coil pack and dizzy, everything is on nice and tight.

Coil has been sitting inside the car the whole time. Same with dizzy not has been touched once.

Car was just like this before headgasket job. One day it didnt want to turn on checked dizzy no spark, came back a couple hours later spark and turnover.

Cousin bought Rotor, Cap, Coil, Plugs, Wires before headgasket job. Car still did its stalls and turnover with new stuff. What is going on!???? What could cause the car to not spark, I have 2 dizzy's laying around and we are trying one as we speak. Any info helps

Okay guys, so I just checked back with my friends sometimes it gets fuel and I just witnessed it myself, when you prime the fuel pump, it didnt do anything, then after like 10 tries it shot a **** load of gas, a few tries later it shoots again.

I check for spark and NOTHING either.

Confused on how this is happening since the car was runnin on Monday.
