cams are quite simple. they have lobes (protrusions) off the cilindar. the cam is attached to a cam gear which is either belt or chain driven off the pully (which is attached to the crank) when the pully spins the belt or chain turns the cam gear which turns the cam. each lobe will push into the lifter or rocker arm which is attacked to the valves. inturn the valves move up and down. the longer the duration (larger the lobe) the better, usually. this allows for more complete combustion as well as release of exhaust gasses via the valves. valves are spring loaded so that when the lobe pushes them down into the head they dont stay down. hope this helps
