How do you divide it? I have an 11 gallon tank, and I drive until my light is on and divide the miles driven on that tank by 10.
Works great.
I usually get ~34 mpg with an exhaust leak.

Not how you want to do it.
1) Fill your tank to full & Reset trip meter
2) Emtpy tank
3) Fill back up
4) Number of miles driven divided by number of galons used. (Most gas stations go three decimal places, so MPG should be like-----> 34.565

This way that everyone is posting is the best way to go about it. You will never get all the gas out of your tank

No, no. WHen you stop to fill for gas, divide your trip number by what it took to get full.
