i have an oil leak coming from my cam seal, and with that being said every 2 weeks i catch low oil pressure. purpose of this post is to ask about the steps involved in a cam seal job.

if it's not too detailed i'll go ahead and knock it out but if i gotta pull this and disconnect that and hassle myself i'll just keep buyin oil until my new motor comes in.

If it's leaking around a quart + a week you need to do the timing belt too. That belt has to be oil soaked and oil soaked belts like to break. Do the belt and have the crank and balancer shaft seals done as well. Water pump too if it's been awhile.

 

you pretty much have to go through all the steps of a timing belt replacement.

Like stated above, those belts are soaked in oil by now and it would be best to replace the belts anyway.

to remove the seal, take a scratch awl and place it on the face of the seal and tap it with a hammer to poke it through the face of the seal. Then just pry it out. Make sure you dont scratch the camshaft or the head. Put the new seal in place, put a large socket over it and tap the socket with the hammer until the seal is in place.

I have pictures from when I did this on a Civic, but it's the same procedure if you'd like to see.

 

yes pics would help a lot TA, it's not so much leaking onto any of the belts it just drips out and trickles down onto the pan.

 

ok, here is basically how it'll look.

step 1: poke the scratch awl through the face of the seal and pry it out


step 2: position the new seal in place


step 3: using a large socket tap the new seal into place


step 4: finished


in step 1 I've already pried the seal out but you get the idea.

good to go, you got any info on my accord to prelude cluster swap as well?

in step 1 you said to poke the scratch awl through the face of the seal and pry it out, What's a scratch awl, don't wanna seem dumb.

 

thats what it's called at Sears. It just a straight piece metal with a sharp point at the end. Sorta like an ice pick I guess.

If you go into Sears and go to the screw driver section you should find them there.

 

thanks for the input, if it wasn't for this post i would of never known how to get a seal out. Does the same method work for the crank seal?

 

After 30 mins of searching, I have heard that if you're going to go in here, you should replace:
Camshaft seal !!!!!
front main seal (are these the same?)
crankshaft seal? (same?)
balance shaft seal(Same?)
water pump seal? or the pump itself?

timing belt
I am trying to narrow down exactly what I need to order here.
I have a very bad leak coming from the very top of the motor and leaking down into the timing belt chamber, and all over the sides of the motor.
I suspect that it is the Camshaft seal shown in the pics in this article. What exactly do I need to order and replace, and how many of the above names are duplicates of the same seal?

Camshaft seal - Top seal where the belt rides over driving the cam(s)
crankshaft seal - Bottom of engine where the accessory belts live, seal is behind the TB gear. (IE Alternator, PS, and AC)
balance shaft seal - This is a seal for the BS, usually has a special retainer on it to prevent it from popping out on its own.
water pump seal/pump. Replace this seal with water pump when doing a TB job. Honda pumps usually have the seal included. USE OEM only for WP, unless you like having premature pump failure.
