AC Compressor turns on and off on HOT days

AC Compressor turns on and off on HOT days
I have a 1991 Honda Accord. The AC works great on cooler days, but when it is extremely hot I can see the compressor turns on for 4 or 5 secs then off for 20 to 30 secs. When I fisrt start the car normally the AC works great, but after driving for a while the cold air slowly gets warmer until it is no longer cold. If I trun off the AC and let it rest then turn it back on it will work great again. Does anyone no what might cause this?
