Changed the spark plugs yesterday, have a few questions. The original plugs were gapped .045
But I read on here with my set up I should be runing around .030 so that is where I gapped them to, should this be okay?

Also the plugs in cyl. 1 and 2...there was some oil on the plugs.. should I be worried? The plugs were deffintly foulded out, my car is in need of a tune. running very rich.

 

They're supposed to by gapped at .043. Why would you change it? You made the gap smaller, thus less spark. Leave it at stock gap and forget about it.

 

oil on plugs can be a bad sign

 

oil in the plugs may mean your gasket at the plug may be bad.. might want to replace them.

 

Was the oil on the tip of the plug? If so you might have problems. Do a compression test and let us know what you get.

If there is oil on the tip his rings could be bad. I think you are talking about the gaskets that go on the valve cover. They will keep oil from going down the spark plug hole, but oil still wouldnt reach the tip.

 

are you running a forced induction set-up? if not stick with the stock gap.

and like smileycvc said the location of the oil on the plug is important

Tip of plug=bad
Top of plug= not so bad, $20 valve cover gasket set will fix.

 

Yes, I am running a FI setup. t3t4 turbo on stock internals set at 8lbs right now.

The oil is on the side of the plug (where the wrench is used to tighten the plug)

The actual bottom of the plug is just dark colored..Due to how rich my car is.

I closened the gap on the plugs because I read somewhere that running a FI setup causes a need for a smaller gap.
Will I hurt anything by going with a .030 gap?

 

or the valve guide seals could be bad.

no you won't, the gap on my blue car is set at .028.

Judging by where the oil is, you just need a valve cover gasket set....and get that thing tuned! that's why you're fouling plugs out, are you just running a basemap of some sort?

 

oil on the "outside" of the plugs, meaning the side without the electrode, is almost always bad spark plug tube seals. Very easy, cheap fix.
