3 Cylinders
Well im not 100% sure but i believe i have a Rod Knock, i searched it and really all my motors symptoms lead to it. Now at idle i removed each plug isolating each cylinder and determined it was the #1 Piston.
Now this is my DD, i work and i go to school and i guess what im trying to determine is whats safer at this point? continue drivng with the knock or run on 3 cylinders till i get my hands on a new motor?
Or what do you guys suggest? TIA

ok first off WTF Are you thinking with????????????????????
ok it'a a 4 banger NOT a V8 ther is not enuff power in 3 cyl. to move the car with out reving it to 4500 evry time you take off from a stop. i mean a V8 can run fine with one cyl.plug wire unhooked and most ppl want notice hell i have a jeep with a V6 that i drove for 2 moths befor i found out that some one had cut the 5th and 6th plug wires in half and i was only running on 4 cly.
also even if you take out the plug on the knoking cyl. you will stil have to move that rod and that adds MORE drag on a half dead motor and it's not going to stop it from throwing a rod. it's still connected to the crank and spinning and a knock is from it having a gap between the crank and the rod and when it spins it 's like hammering on that gap and making it bigger.
plus that gap means Less oil pressure wich = less oil for every thing else like the valve train and cam.
not to mention that when the rod comes free from the crank your going to destroy that block and some one might have wanted it at this point it's still rebiuldable and if you throw the rod through the side it's junk.
i mean PPL come on use Common sence.

Are you blind??? i NEVER said it wouldn't Run i said it wouldn't have Enuff power.
i tried it in my 89 Teg when the rod started Knocking to see if i could Limp it home all of 2 Miles and theres just Not Enuff power in 3 Cyl. to do it even knocking the 4th cyl. is making power.

if it has a rod knock, why the hell are you asking if it is safe for the motor to run on 3 cylinders? Ride it out until it pukes... As for power, I rode my 3 cyl geo metro on 2 cylinders for about a month and it got me where I needed to go.
The car will run and have enough power to get somewhere. Not very quickly thats for sure, but it will get you where you need to go.
To the OP, however if you have a rod knock disabling that cylinder isnt going to help you at all. You rod is still moving, but now your not getting any power from that cylinder. Also you will have lower oil pressure so you are just going to mess more stuff up. If you have to drive it though keep all the cylinders running eventually the rod will break and put a hole in the block. Good luck though.

1.) no, it's not safe or intelligent to run your vehicle like that.
2.) unless you're a mechanic, don't make suggestions. You can tell us what you've done to determine that you're running on three cylinders - rod knock doesn't keep a cylinder from working, by the way - and we can extrapolate from there.
So you pulled a couple plug wires and determined that cylinder 1 (timing belt side) isn't working. What else have you done? Checking the oil would be a good thing to list.
