So I crashed my 1000RR on a street ride (low sided on some "hidden"gravel). I'm going to get a new bike, but am facing a little dilemma. I'm going to start track days next March, and with no track time under my belt, I'm considering buying a 600. I cannot afford two bikes (1000 for street and 600 for track), so what do you track guys recommend?

EngineNo9: agreed, the 750 is also on my list of potential bikes, since I'm a little hefty (I plan on losing weight, though).
Jasper: bent subframe, scratched frame, scratched/dented swingarm, broken tail, scratched tank shelter, left mid and lower faring, broken mirror, and to top it off, the bike pulls the right. If I let off the bars, it pulls. As I roll, I have to pull back the right clip-on to maintain a straight line, to the point where it strains my right arm.

I knew when i was writing that you were gonna post your bullshit. I thought about posting a disclaimer for you not to comment but figured since I wasn't talking about track times and just HANDLING the bike that it'd be alright but apparently not. Every thread that mentions a 1000 and the track you post the same thing and it's ******* annoying. I'm not even disagreeing that most riders need to learn to be better on a 600 first but ****, not everyone is in it for lap times and racing. Some people have fun on the 1000's and if they can handle riding a 1000 at a fast pace on the track, then let them. ****....

as I mentioned before. A 600 is by far your best option. The 1000 you're going to constantly have to worry about spinning up the rear tire and also keeping the power down. The 600 you can focus a lot more on your actual technique

LOL, I found your buttons in that other thread and I wanted to push some, guess it worked.
To answer your question though Pheonix I would get a 600, but what do I know.

No worries, I was just being stupid and tried to get you to bite on my comment after seeing what happened in the last thread. Despite how I come off on HT, I really don't give two ***** about what you ride, how you ride it, and what you wear while doing it. I just like to stir up debate

don't worry about how much you weigh when picking a bike. 240 or 150, a 600 will get you going fast enough that it's not really gonna matter.
I dunno, i like the idea of the SV as a track bike. they're light, cheap, and plentiful. If u hate the idea of a twin, then any i4 600 will be great on track as well. just a matter of what you prefer.
A 750 would be fun, but i know i'm not ready for one on track. i wonder if you'll get "bored" with the power of a 600, but people who get bored of the lack of brute power at trackdays are doing it wrong

I am really getting bored of tapping on my dash and asking "is anyone home" until the tach clears 10k rpm on the street. I dont like running the engine that high on the street - its loud, obnoxious, sucks gas and the vibrations suck. My next street bike will have a bigger engine, even if its only a 675, 750, etc. More than enough power up top on track though.

yeah my bike has good midrange for street riding, but the next street bike will definitely have brutal world stopping midrange pwr/tq, just to see what that's all about.
on track the f4i still peels my face off at 12000 rpm.

I can see how the 600's power band would not be as fun on the street as my 1000, but I'm prepared to live with that as I don't haul too much *** around the streets...

If you want good advice on this subject, try some racer forums.
I have found lots of solid info at the WERA forums:
http://forums.13x.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=12
Ever consider a new or used 1000 and then pickup a track only bike for cheap? You can pickup an older 600 setup for the track (yr 2000+) for around 3gs if you look around. There are a few 05-06 600rrs and gsxr600s on the wera forums right now for around 3gs.

Well it looks like the insurance company will be paying to repair my bike. I'm going to get her fixed up and look for a cheap, track-able 600. I'll let you guys know what happens, thanks for your input.
i have a 750 and rode on an 2006 r6 the other day man i can go in the corner a bit faster in the r6 its a light bike.. still need to test out the cbr600 to compare.
I think a 750 would be perfect. It is still light and very flickable in turns but still has the low and midrange that a 1000 has. You wont get bored with it. It is also a little more forgiving when you get into some trouble then a 1000 would be. I have a RC51 and as you know it was made to compete in the 750 class. I love it the power is great the handling is awesome when dialed in and the hig gear ratio makes it easy to downshift. Even tho the only noew 750 you would get is the
GSXR which coes with a slipper clutch anyway. So get something you are going to like and not something you think will be safer. Fact if the matter is that you can crash on a 600,750 or a 1000. If you are ridng beyond your skills it doesn't matter. But i do think a 1000 will be a little much. I would be to worried about slowing the bike down and keeping traction out of corners then finding the fastest line around the track. But im not a maniac either and i have to get very comfortable before a try something im not used to. You maybe a better rider so get what you want.

dude your bike by any reasonable calculation is totaled, your frame is bend, or at the very least is scratched, which on the insurance claims means has to be replaced which automatically totals a bike
how they hell does this work? tell them its totaled, buy it back for like 500$, get your 9XXX and buy a 4K street bike and register that for street, and dont worry about registering or insuring the track bike and tow it there, fix it with the 5K you save

I know, I know. The insurance company is still making me wait, no word at this point if they are still going to repair it or what.
The total damage, not including the scratch on the frame, is 3800.00 in parts and labor, so we'll see.
