okay i have a 96 civic ex coupe...and when i go to lock/unlock my door by stick the key in the door on the drivers side the lock on the passenger side does nothing...as well as when i push the lock and unlock button on the inside...the drivers side works fine...just not the passenger side...how do i fix this? i was working fine and never had that problem...then just out of nowhere this happend
Check for continuity on the key cylinder switch for the driver's side. It should be a two pin connector located near the connector for the door lock actuator.
Remove the passenger door skin (very easy! you'll need a phillips screw driver, and a small panel popper). Once this has been done, the inside of the door will be exposed. Remove the plastic protection sheet (If it's still there, it's simple to remove by pulling carefully). Now the door is really exposed. The door lock actuator is located inside the door, high up on the right side (it's attached to the doors latch). Don't worry about getting right to the actuator because you don't have to. You will see two fat wires going to the actuator (these wire rest at ground, switching or reversing 12v will make the actuator throw in either direction). Your problem right now is that the actuator is NOT throwing. If you put ground on one wire, and 12v on the other, the actuator will throw. Once it has done this, simply reverse the polarity and the actuator should throw the other way. This is how you hot wire an actuator. If yours throws both ways after doing the test I just mentioned, your problem is not the actuator and is most likely in the car (switch, broken wire, faulty connection, loose pin, etc). This is the easiest, fastest, and most secure way of finding your problem fast. If it proves to be an actutor problem, they are not too expensive at the dealer and very easy to change. An aftermarket actuator is under $10.00 normally
