^ That was going to be my answer, and just your little bump in the road is probably the last little thing that made it go "kaboom". Probably beat the living hell out of the thing and knew it was going so they sold it.

this can be cause by a couple things... but it all comes down to wear and tear....

more than likely a bearing or two was broken...

did your tranny make sounds?

same thing happened to my LS tranny. I bought it used... and after like 5k i was on the highway just cruising at 70mph and the **** blows up, almost in the same exact place as that one. I have no idea why or how it happened. The trann ****** perfect no grinds or anything.

happened with me with a cable ls tranny, either the input or pilot bearing was worn down and it was making a grinding noise about 2 months into the tranny failing on me on the highway. But god damn that's a big explosion you got there.

something similar happened to a buddy car. He bought it as a one owner car from an woman. So we thought she took care of it. We boosted the car on 5lbs, we were out at the track with some 225 BFG drag radials. after 4 runs, on the 5th run he goes for the a launch and the car free revs.

The gears in his differential shreaded and shot out the casing. leave a few nice holes too.

on a better note the car was doing low 14's and high 13's on only 5lbs on an LS motor.

did you check the tranny fluid level? i think thats what happens when you run the tranny dry.

you said there was a trail of oil leading to a puddle. is it possible the drain plug or somthing came out, then the gears seized and went kablooey?

Well blowing the pin in the differential is different. That normally comes from high rev dumping of the clutch. I know because my tranny was in perfect condition, and I sold it to my friend, no grinds or nothing, he said he was leaving a buddies house, and was trying to catch his other friend from a stop. So he revved it to about redline let it drop to about 6.5k rpm's, dumped the clutch, then it free reved. Went to his house, took out the tranny, blown differential...
