Brake caliper question - I did search
Okay, I'm trying to figure out a kind of hybrid big brake kit and need a little info from those that have tried the typical options. I already have the sucky aem big brake kit (w/o calipers), so I'm wanting to upgrade the calipers while still using the discs. I hate the HOR, but I don't see just tossing the whole kit when it's lasted this long (3 years) and performed okay.
Thus the discs will be the 23mm wide discs. Is there a way around this maybe by getting the Legend GS calipers and shimming the pads? Can I still use my 23T brackets or do I have to step up to the 28T to get the Legend calipers to work.
I just don't want to spend a bunch of money on new calipers and find out I can't use my current discs. Let me know if anyone has any ideas.
Thanks.

Well the Legend GS calipers fit over a 11.1" rotor just fine but I'm not sure if they'd fit the AEM big brake kit's rotor (aren't those usually around 12"?). If they do, I don't see why you couldn't put them on, though maybe now you may have to get a different caliper relocation bracket. And if you're putting in 23 mm rotors, you should get 23T brackets that will fit over the diameter of your rotor in the AEM big brake kit.
I'm confused, I thought my accord (1994) came with 23T brackets since I have 23mm wide discs. Are there several different types of 23T brackets or just the ones that I think are on my car?
The other issue with the discs of the typical upgrade (11.1") and my AEMs (12.15" I think) shouldn't be that big of an issue since the stupid AEM "Big Brake" Upgrade uses my stock calipers which are made for the stock size rotors in the first place (9.8"?). I think I just need to get the calipers mounted using whatever brackets work and make sure that the pads are shimmed right for my width of rotors.
Does anyone else have any ideas on this issue? Thanks.

i dont have a solution, but i ahve a question. why do you feel the need to upgrade to larger calipers? do you track your car? the large dia. rotors alone should give you a significant increase in brake torque. the accords single piston alising calipers can hold up better than you might think. IIRC there was a 5th gen accord piloted by a couple members on this forum who competed quite well in NASA's honda challenge with the stock calipers. plus, in case you dont know, the s2ks brakes are single piston sliding calipers too. unless your just looking for bling factor, maybe you should look elsewhere for brake improvement, such as better fluid (or better fluid maintenance, if your driving THAT hard to consider new calipers, you should be flsuhing your fluid atleast once a week), better pad, and definately better brake control.
I don't currently track the car, but when my new tires come in next week, I plan to start tracking it. I have a turbo charged H22 swap in the car currently and though the brakes are pretty good on the street, I'm doing some precautionary stuff I just never got around to like upgrading my master cylinder to the larger EX one, actually putting in my stainless steel lines I've had lying around for almost a year, and upgrading the fluid to DOT 4.
I do bleed the brakes a couple times a year, but the car just doesn't get driven all that often, and if I'm taking it to the track, I just want to make sure I have the stopping ability to bring me down with confidence. As far as pads, I currently run Axxis pads all around and they have been good thus far, so I'll probably stay with them, EBC or Hawk pads when I have to get new pads for the caliper swap.
It's not that I doubt the accord's calipers' abilities, I just want to replace them for the track and figured that an upgrade wouldn't cost that much more and may as well be done while I'm in there. With help from the link that was posted by Redneck (thanks, by the way) I'll probably be getting the GS calipers and trying them on my 23T brackets. It it works, great, if not, I'll get the 25T and shim the pads.
I do appreciate everyone's help and insight with this issue. Thanks.

turbo'd H22 + track time in the future. sounds like a legit reason to me for upgrading brakes
. as far as which brake pad to use i would recomend reading up int he RR/auto-x forum. for some reason honda racers dont like EBC too much, but i know the BMW community love them. i have a friend whos curently using EBC red stuff and love them, he doesnt track his car but he does do very heated mountain runs and they havent disapointed him yet. on my project miata i have went the route of hawk HPS pads, havent driven em yet though, but when i do and your still deciding i'll be sure to let you know what i think about them.
