Default Failed smog CA :(...

So today I went in to smog my car and the only thing that failed was the NO. Here are my results:

Now, I am aware that high combustion temps cause this and its usually attributed to the EGR valve. My HC's were fairly low so I'm pretty sure my cat is fine. I wanted to clean the EGR valve as well as the ports, but my car doesn't seem to have an EGR valve!?

PS According to the smog sheet my timing is at 18BTC is this normal for a d15? Excuse my ignorance here, as this is my first civic. thanks.

From Honda...For almost all D15 and D16 engines...I am pretty sure a lot of Honda 4-cyl engines are usually at 16-18

Ignition Timing
18±2° BTDC
at 750±50 rpm is
neutral

Hope you get it passed bro.

Youre low enough in other areas that you can probably... decrease your timing to lower your NOx reading. I forget if its increase or decrease, you can look it up though. Pretty sure its decrease.

But with that high of NOx and low everything else, it seems like youre getting good combustion, but your cat isnt cleaning up the NOx. High NOx, low everything else generally points to a bad cat.

I dont think EF's have EGR's... I could be wrong, but its not in the manual either... I know my "newer" hondas have had them, but i think the EF's came without.

Yes dropping your timing to 16btdc would lower your nox. You do have alot of 02 coming out the pipe so unless you have an exhaust leak the cat is on it's way out, or the 02 sensor is not working properly for the cat to store the O2.

If timing does not do it you can decarbonize to remove carbon which in-turn will lower nox too.

If you do go with the cat I would also get an O2 sensor just for piece of mind and to get things back in order. Unless you just want to check the 02 sensor that would be fine.

smogman-Yeah, I do have an exhaust leak. I looked around my pcv valve and it looks like it may be clogged. i will be replacing that today as well as putting some seafoam or something in there as well. I am planning on physically cleaning the pcv port and hopefully inside the manifold with a pipe cleaner brush or something. So, you say that retarding my timing will do then? I also plan on running 91 next time I smog (prob tomorrow).

Thanks for all your input folks!

You have the car reg's in a basic area and for that you have no Nox readings.

Bar'ed Good for you. You have alot of O2 coming out the pipe too. What cat do you have on it? Do you have any exhaust leaks? This test is easier to get thru because you aren't running with a load on the dyno.

I wish I had a scanner I would show you mine but here is the numbers of the last one D16a6 w/218K header and SRI only. New O2 and de-carbon'ed w/2yr old stock repl. cat.
HC
15 37
25 27

CO
0.00 for both

Nox
15 132
25 89

O2
0.0 for both

CO2
15.1 for both.

Timing set at 17BTDC at 19 the Nox was up to 310 and 201

smogman-any de-carbonizing tips? Excuse the ignorance here, which way do you rotate the distributor to retard timing. Towards the firewall or the front of the car? Thanks.

9) To retard your timing, turn the distributer slightly clockwise and recheck with the light.

10) To advance your timing, turn the distributer counter clockwise.

I use Seafoam. I only use it thru the manifold. I disconnect the vacuum hose from the manifold that goes to the fuel pressure regulator and attach a longer hose.

I fill a cup with about 5oz.'s start the car and rev to 2500k or close to it and then stick the hose in the cup a little bit at a time til you finish that 5oz.'s and turn off the car for 10 minutes.

Restart it and do the same process again. Let it sit for another 10 minutes.

Start it up and run the S%&# out of it to get all the loosened carbon to blow out.

You will see alot of smoke, it is nothing to worry about.

Also I recommend 87 octane also for the test.
The timing is toward the firewall but a little (Very very little) is all you need.

I see. Thanks a mil. I already put a can of seafoam in my tank, but I will buy another to employ your method. I put 91 in my tank right now, but i will make sure to run 87 for the test. I bought the PCV valve earlier too and will be replacing that in a little bit. Once again, I really appreciate the help.

if you have a 1.5 hf you have an egr... if not, then i would clean the intake manifold, use seafoam like the bottle tells you, and do a basic tune up. that exhaust leak will throw the readings way off. thats probably another reason why you have high nox.

So, I did the seafoam into the intake manifold procedure yesterday and WOW, was there a lot of smoke. I am honestly surprised no one called the fire department! I also replace my pcv valve. For now I am running seafoam in the engine (crankcase) and in the fuel system. This mf should be as clean as a whistle before my next smog test. i will be changing my oil before I go in though.
check ou the old pcv next to the new one (guess which is which

you should not drive with the seafoam in the motor oil, make sure you change it asap. It should only be put in and run at idle for a couple minutes.

hmmm...really. Its understandable due to the fact that a lot of crap is bound to come loose in the engine, but I believe driving it is what actually removes the build up. Regardless, I will be changing the oil today.

High NOx usually means your catalytic is bad. Two of my buddies own smog stations/TEST ONLY centers and I have never had a problem passing smog so long as you keep up on your cars maintanace.
