Gotta start some where......
Hey fellas ,
Well the time has come , after a **** load of thinking , I have finally decided that I want to buy a bike .
I have a little bit of knowlege and know how when it comes to riding motorcycles.
It started last year when I was living with my father. He has been riding since he was in his teens , and is now almost 50.
He rides a Harley Road King now , but has owned a bunch of different Harley bikes.
He introduced me into riding last year when he was going for a ride , he happened to have a 99' Sportster 1200 sitting in the garage , wich was originally for sale .
It was my first time ever riding a bike so he tought me the basics , and what I needed to know , the rest he let me figure out on my own , he thinks it's the best way to learn.
I rode that all summer long along with my friends older ZX-9 . I enjoyed both bikes , although with the Sportster I noticed a fair amount of back pain after long rides .
So I really thought about the 2 different bikes and I have decided that I want to buy a 'sport bike' .
Now here is where I am stuck , I really don't know what bike would be ideal for me.
I would ride my bike during the work week , my drive to work is a hour long drive , and I would more then likely drive it on the weekends when applicable.
The only suggestion I got from a friend was a GSX-R 1000 , he mentioned something beeing able to adjust the computer to where the motor output would be equal to a '600' a '750' and '1000'.
I'm not sure if that is true or not but I could see that beeing very helpful to a some what new rider .
So if you guys could , just make a few suggestions or comments , everything is appreciated , ask any questions if need be .
Thanks - Ari

Buy used, depreciation won't hit you as hard as if you were buying brand new, odds are you're going to drop the bike, so replacement parts for an older bike will be cheaper, insurance will be lower.
Do not buy a brand new supersport. They're way too much for a rookie rider, and a drop/crash will be costly. Get an older 600, or buy a Ninja 500.
I would recommend a Ninja 250, but people always seem to think it's too slow, so they don't listen. But please do a favor for all other riders out there and don't go over a 600...even though they're too much for someone with your riding experience. Nothing personal man, please don't take any offense.

None taken at all , when I do finally get on something you will see me in full gear my 1st day out
Safety is number 1 priority with a subject at hand like this.
I honestly think I would be happy and safe with a 600 as a starter bike .
and I was thinking to myself , what ever I end up getting , I will order a cage for the bike before it evens comes , I do expect atleast a drop or 2 withing the 1st few months

That's the key word...I once used to think the same, but reading and interacting with other riders with many, many more years and miles of experience, made me contemplate starting out with a 250...maybe a 500 like a GS500. If you're set on starting out on a 600, at least buy an older one...for the reasons I mentioned on my previous post. A CBR F2, F3 make great 1st bikes, but don't think that because they're old they're slow...they can still get you into trouble easily if you don't respect it.

I may be wrong, but don't expect those cages to safely protect your bike in 100% of drops. I remember seeing some crash pics of a bike with said cages, and the bike was still totalled.
Now, you said it yourself...you are expecting a drop or two, so get an older bike because it will be easier on your wallet.

Who let you out of GDD?
Listen to these jerks, they might be blunt but they give good advice.
This is honestly the nicest I've seen /26 been in a "What bike should I get" thread. Y'all getting soft on me

What kind of budget? This is my first season for owning/riding a motorcycle so am in no way very knowledgable...but it's pretty much universal what type of bikes people will tell you to get.
1. Kawasaki Ninja 250/500 (inexpensive but most people upgrade quickly)
2. Suzuki gs500f (look nice but imo fairings are cheap up close)
3. Honda CBR 600 F2/F3/F4/F4i (I have an F2 and love it as my first bike)
4. Yamaha YZF600R earlier models (cheap)
5. Suzuki GSXR600 pre-2000 or a Katana 600
6. SV650 or I hear the new Ninja 650's are also nice and aimed to be more "forgiving"
