I've seen ppl do this, making vertical slash marks on the tred of the tire like: [||||||] (seeing the tire flat on the ground). is it worth doing? i hear it increases grip, lowers temps, and lasts longer... any experience?

I think you mean tire siping? And no would be your answer unless the tires are snow/ice or regular passenger tires. Siping does all what you mentioned except that if you did that do a performance tire, it would destroy it. HTH

If the grooves made it perform better, they would be there.

 

Because the tire is cut up into smaller pieces. They can chunk up easier. This is all information coming from my buddy who works for discount tire.

 

...could probably get away with doing it, considering he walks on water...
