90 Accord coolant leak
My 90 Accord has an intermittent coolant leak that appears to be coming from the the right side of the timing cover running down the block. Kinda of odd because it leaks only sometimes. Any ideas on this one?

so towards the back of the engine or front? Or are you refering to right side of the engine near the timing cover? Heres the best trick, engine degress your engine then pressure wash, cover distributor first. check the hoses that go to the throttle body. may be the water pump though. if u know how to take off the timing cover look to see any evidence of radiator fluid. just my advise!

Head gasket leak will usually be higher up. Water pump leak will usually show from about halfway down the back side of the block or lower. Look for a trail of crystalized coolant. If it's dripping out the bottom of the timing cover it is more likely a water pump.
If you can get under the car you can quite often gently pry the lower cover back about midway up and see if it is the water pump. Not always though. You may have to pull the covers to find out for sure.

Thanks for all the replies.
I just opened timing cover and it looks like the water pump. Now I'm guessing the fix means doing a timing belt and whatever else comes off to replace the pump.

Good idea to do the cam, crank and balancer shaft seals while you are in there as well. Nothing worse than putting a new belt on and having it get oil soaked. I would also not reccomend using a cheap water pump. Anytime I see a waterpump leaking before it's interval it been an aftermarket pump.
