Default 500 to paint my self

i went to a local paint shop and got a quote on how much i would have to spend for painting my ef hatch. 500 was the price they gave me. anyone around the northshore area in mass know where i can get paint at a cheaper price. i'm not sure what i should ask for . they were tellingme to get a gallon of paint clear, thinner, and a bunch of other things. what do i really need to paint a car???

I was going to get a Wagner electric HVLP paint gun for $50 and use that to spray my car with a single stage enamel.
If you want like a real good factory base clear job then get the whole kit with urethane base and clear plus all additives, but thats going to be expensive.

If you would be satisfied with a cheaper single stage enamel then spray that on there and single stage will be shiny with no clearcoat. But instead of lasting 10 years liek the urethane job the enamel might last 5. But its cheap enough that you can always paint it again, and 5 years is a long time.

Also I think I should add that the reason the enamel wont last as long is because it has no UV protection like a urethane CC would, but if you wax the enamel say once every month or two it should be good for a good while...

wow, i bought everything i need, including a gallon sprayable of base, 1.3 gallons sprayable of clear, and primer, additives, sandpaper, tape, EVRYTHING here in ohio for 380, but 500 is still a lot cheaper than any shop will charge to do a complete paint job around here

Yes there is a cheaper route.
Do yourself a favor and visit this site:

I'm getting my paint from these guys. Read their customer testimonials.
They sell a gallon of urethane clear and all reducers for $75.

I'm just going single stage enamel jet gloss black $65.

Only drawback is they cant mix up a specific color, but they have plenty of nice looking colors to choose from....
