2003 Honda Pilot, code P1491, need to clean EGR ports
Does anyone know where to get instructions for cleaning the EGR ports on my 2003 honda pilot.
I have a 1997 Accord and found great instructions at https://honda-tech.com/zerothread/1664547
Under:
EGR Port Cleaning for 90-97 Accords and
94-97 Accord EGR Port Cleaning
I am sure that my error code fits under:
TSB #012704 -- REQUEST FOR VISIT. CUSTOMER COMPLAINT OF THE ENGINE STUMBLING, SHUDDERING, HESITATING, OR MOMENTARILY SURGING. MAY ALSO EXPERIENCE A CHECK ENGINE LIGHT, AND DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC) P1491 MAY BE DISPLAYED. *TT (NHTSA ID #10005652, JANUARY 27 2004)
and
TSB #00009 -- WARRANTY EXTENSION: EGR VALVE CONTAMINATION OR EGR POR CLOGGING MAY CAUSE DTC P0401, DTC P1491, OR ENGINE HESITATION/SURGE. *TT (NHTSA ID #10017431, JULY 20 2005)
I would however like to fix it myself if I could. I do not live close to a dealer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

The repair is under s/b 05-026. It is covered under the Emissions extension for 8 years 80,000 miles under certain vin ranges. If you want to do this repair yourself, just replace the EGR valve and gasket. No cleaning is required. The repair is just for a sticking valve and not a cloged port like in the S/B you listed. A kit form the dealership will run you under $100.00. Good luck

Its located to the right of the front cylinder head, its #1 in the above link.

The links to pics of the location of the EGR valve in this thread don't work, so I posted pics of the one in my Pilot when I replaced it this afternoon - BTW, easiest repair job ever, but it did take a while to find the darn thing.

I would recommend cleaning the ports also. There's probably a ton of crap in there that clogged the EGR valve to begin with. Only takes about an hour to clean or less. Peace of mind.
