Default Slicks and axles

Im sure you have all heard someone say.. "I'd run better times with slicks.. but i dont want to break an axle".

What is the actual truth to this.. Do they really snap that frequently. I mean yes i know that is a hell of alot more stress but in reality how often to they actually break, as i've never seen anyone at a track snap one.

Another reason is because i am going to be tuning my car to be somewhere up in the 400-500 hp range this winter (I'd like sizing and fitment with that power level help also if possible, its a 92 cx) With slicks, should i really be expecting for an axle to break? And if so what kind of axles are you guys using.

slicks are better on axles than radials because of wheel hop, but they can still break. most of the time they break on the launch.

people will tell you stock axles are fine to 600. for a select few they are. i had problems last year with the green axles. leaving harder (meaning i actually have antilag now w00t!) this year, my dss 5.9's are holding up.

as far as size, with that power level, 25" tall 8.5-9" wide on 13's.

24.5 x 8 x 13 MT's and i was able to cut 1.7 60's all day long making right at or under 500whp. I know I can do better but that isn't bad for a new guy on slicks. Since then I have managed to destroy two axles but never have they broke on the line. One time the axle came out the tranny and the joint in the boot seemed totaly locked up. This was after a hard highway pull on the way home. The other time the car had a really nasty vibration on accelertation the next day after a track night so I swaped axles and it went away.

Autozone $59.99 and you get unlimited axles for life. I keep an extra pair with me at the track.

The only time i have ever seen an axel break it was a 99 itr with Drag radials. Snapped it on the launch.

As long as you preload the drivetrain you shouldn't break axles.

I learned the hard way but I now use my E brake to preload works great.

How are the slicks fitting, needing spacing at all?

the bottom line is whether or not you have good axle geometry. by that i mean, the straighter your axles are, the less likely you are to break them. i've broken 3 DSS level 3.9s in my car because of the angle they sit at. its not the bar that breaks but the cage inside the cv joints. they are by far the weak link in the axle. the way your motor is mounted will make the biggest impact.

I have seen a 150kw N/A crx keep braking axels, even a 400HP rated axel.

Problem was a small solid centre clutch plate!

As soon as i fitted my ATS metal diff and ran hoosier DOT slicks I broke a inner C.V bearing and had vibration. Launching at 8000rpm tho, hehe.

There were prolly 15+ cars at last weekends BOTI Seattle that broke axles, like 4-5 right in a row. It was friggin crazy.

i guess im one of the select few. i have never broken an axle and i ran 24.5" slicks w/ almost 600 whp on stock axles. now watch, i'll pull the damn thing out of the driveway and snap one just b/c i said that.

as long as you dont have alota vertical movement (Wheelhop) then they hold up well.

as for spacing, you may need a 1/8" or 1/4" spacer. i got away w/ an 1/8" one, but i guess it depends on the wheel type, etc

i agree with the many that say stock axles are fine wheel hop is what kills them. Ive seen axles twist in two, right in the middle with horrible axles hop in 1st footed it and and as soon as shifted second axle broke.

so what would be the best rims that you would use to run slicks on with stock axels? stock si's or slips? or would it really make a diff?
I am actually scared to run slicks because if I break them, then My car would be stuck at the track.

if you are going to use 15" wheels, use some 22" slicks for a 15" wheel. if you want big slicks (24.5" - 26"), then you need some 13" drag wheels. get AAA and if you break your car, have them tow it home i've done it before when i broke a tranny
