Default B16A2 - Skunk2 Stage 1 or Blox A & tuning?

My first post so be gentle

Ok some background first...
92 Del Sol, B16A2 with basic mods - J's style intake, Hondata style IM gasket, stainless tri-Y header, decat and 2.25" exhaust.

I'm aiming to just get a little bit more power to get my 1/4 mile times down a little - I'm not going for big power - also this is a daily driver and I'm on a very limited budget.

From what I've read it looks like either Skunk2 stage 1 or Blox type A cams would be a good choice. If these were installed with the standard valvetrain and standard ECU (standard rev limit) would I get any gains and would it be safe? I know the ideal solution would be an uprated valvetrain and Crome/Hondata with dyno mapping but all that takes $$ I can live with not getting every last pony out of them as long as it's reliable and gives a noticeable gain.

I've tried discussing this with local techies but they all seem to be of the mindset that "bigger cams=better" and "No point doing cams unless you port & polish"

My overall budget is about £800 ($1600) which sounds plenty but everything here costs double - the cams alone would cost £500 ($1000) here

Summary: B16 with standard bolt-ons - adding S2S1/Blox A cams with no tuning & standard valvetrain - Safe enough? and any reasonable kind of gain?

Anything bigger than ITR/CTR cams and you'll need to raise the rev limiter up, change Vtec crossover and adjust the fueling a bit to really benefit from those cams. Running a stock ecu will cause the car to fall a little flat at Vtec x-over and you'll be bumping the rev limiter when your car is starting to pull nicely.

Thanks for the reply

I do have a VAFC so I could change the VTEC crossover, I'd be a bit wary of adjusting the fuelling without someone with a wideband and more knowledge than me though heh
At the moment the VAFC is just hooked up to act like a pretty guage rather than change anything.

Would an ECU & basemap from Phearable be better? (keeping the stock redline though, unless I could get the cash for springs/retainers)

Another quick one, with the stock ECU & no tuning, would I see any gains or some gains but not as much as I would with the fuelling & VTEC crossover sorted?

To take full advantage of any mods you make, you will need someone who's able to tune for you. Without tuning, modding your car is basically pointless.

Yes absolutely, providing you get the car properly tuned after. A basemap is only intended to get you "close" to where you should be tuning wise. If it's not tuned after this, you could be running lean and not know it and damage could occur, not to mention that you might not be getting max benefit from the mods/money you just made/spent. With CTR/ITR, S2S1, Blox A, BC 3 cams, you could swap in a set of ITR inner springs for really cheap (into your existing/stock outer springs). Lots of people do this so search on here for more info if you're interested. This will allow you to raise your rev limiter a few hundred rpm higher which should be enough for the cams you want to use.
