Default Failed Emissions... Need suggestions

My 95 GSR is failing emissions pretty badly... here are my readings:

(Allowed/What my car did)
Hydrocarbons (146ppm / 194) Failed
CO% (0.82 / 0.73) Passed, but close
NOx (1134 / 3155) Failed
CO+CO2 (6.0min / 14.5) Passed easily

I got to reading about the potential causes for high NOx and I found that the EGR valve controls this... however I haven't been able to find an EGR valve on my car (do our cars have one?) I suspect that I might have a problem with my cat, but from what I've heard, a properly running honda can pass without a cat even.

As far as running, the car seems to be running great. It's all stock (to the best of my knowledge) and put down 152hp to the ground about 2 weeks ago.

ANY advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Afaik, there's no EGR on 3rd gen Tegs. EGR == Exhaust Gas Recirculation, and I know there are definately no hoses attached to any of my exhaust components. So, unless it's all inside the head (I don't think it is; seems pretty impractical too), then there's no EGR.

Make sure your engine is tuned up, then check out your cat... Make sure your valves are adjusted, and check your ignition system (timing, distributor car & rotor, spark plugs & wires). Just replacing my worn distributor cap gave me a 3-4 mpg increase. I went from about 25-26mpg to 28-30mpg. The mpg improvement is a result of the engine running more efficiently, which usually means less emissions.

Oh, and if you just bought the car (ie haven't previously passed emissions with it), make sure the previous owner didn't hollow out the cat. A lot of times, people will put their car back to stock before selling it, so just because it is currently stock doesn't mean it always has been. Hollowing out the cat isn't an undo-able modification, you'd need to get a new one.

Yeah, I'm thinking that the cat might be the problem. I've got a weird exhaust rattle and I'm thinking that it might be a busted cat... especially after the emissions test.

if u ask me, i think the easiest way to pass smog is to get some sort of fuel controller. your gonna need it later on no matter wat u do to your car anyways, might as well get one now. with that u can jus lean out your fuel and vola! less gas to burn, less emissions...... uh, i think it works, hahaha, can any1 second this?

Its the fuel regulator. Located on the right side of the valve cover and next to the manifold on the right side also if your looking at it from the front of the car.

You're talking about the PCV valve. On the GS-R's it's very difficult to access, underneath the intake manifold.

Just want to say thanks for all the help and let everyone know what I did.

- New Car Sound Cat (old cat was EMPTY)
- New NGK Spark Plugs BKR6E-11 gapped @ 0.044 (I guessed on the gap... but it seems to work fine)
- New OEM Cap / Rotor
- Checked Timing although it wasn't in need of adjustment

New score:

HC: 21ppm (146 allowed) Last test this # was 194ppm
CO%:0.11 (0.82 allowed)
NOx: 21ppm (1134 allowed) Last test this # was 3155ppm!!
