Default Weird Ocassional overheating problem

Hey everyone,

Well this is my problem. My car has never overheated ever since I bought her last October of 06. She's a 1989 Crx with 130K original miles, now converted to mpfi and runs beautifully. Just about two nights ago while driving home on the freeway for about 15 miles, the temp gauge started to suddenly rise when Im stopped at the window at Taco Bell. I quickly parked the car and ate while she cooled. I waited for about 10 minutes and drove home while the temp gauge was about 1/4 on the cool side.

I drove home from work the next night and no overheating. But just this night, she started to overheat and guess where???....while I was at the window getting food at JACK IN THE BOX! I was like wtf?! .....So that leaves me stumped. I searched and couldn't really find if there was some kind of pinpoint from my weird symptoms.

If anyone can chime in, Id appreciate it. Thanks

P.S. Nothing I know of was replaced in the engine except a brand new radiator that was put in on Nov. last year.

edit: grammer owned me

i had the same problem, however it went away three weeks ago and never showed up again. Although I never figured out the problem, i did open my radiator cap to inspect for a leaks and cracks in the rubber seal around the cap, nothing there. suspected maybe a blown head gasket or something along the sort, but i replaced nothing and it went away. Check for the usual starting with the easy stuff (rad cap, hoses, thermo) orrrrrrr maybe you should just bleed the system again. good luck

oh and check to see if your fan turns on when you're idling, maybe it's a faulty fan switch.

I'm with dc2415...most likely your fan isn't coming on.

This is the switch on the t-stat housing btw.

I'm having a problem with cooling as well. well not so much cooling as the gauge not working at all. I replaced the tw sensor and the sensor right next to it under the distirbutor and nothing happened. I dont think my fan is turning on either. I have to put my climate control on AC and turn on the blower to get the fan to run, at least that keeps the coolant from boiling. any ideas?

i had this same problem and it was my head gasket letting in air to my thermostat and i had to keep bleeding it till i could get it fixed. I would bleed your radiator and see if it has some air in it, and that will narrow it down for you some more.

that problem of overheating that supposedly went away on it's own just reared it's ugly head today. what a coincidence. I noticed that my fans aren't coming on at it's supposed interval, so I think my problem might be a faulty fan switch. It doesn't come on as it should. I will check it out on monday at the shop and let everyone know how it goes.

Thanks for the reply guys! I havent had internet connection due to a switch in service providers, but I only replaced the radiator cap and it hasnt overheated...yet! The old one looked like a dog ate it or something.

I let the car idle for about 15 minutes but the cooling fan didn't come one. I'll try idling it for about 1/2 an hour to see if if just takes longer to warm up. Thanks for the advice though guys!

not to throw you off too much nickwil, but I'm actually getting a cylinder leakdown test to test for a possible leaking head gasket, so that actually might be a possibility for you as well! check to see if you're losing any coolant between intervals to be sure!

if the problem is only happening when you are stopped its probably an air flow problem, which means the fans are not coming on. when i had my b16 crx I didnt have my fans wired and it would get hot if i sat for a bit.

if your fans are coming on try to rev it up and bit and see if that helps, it could be the impeller on the waterpump is worn and not funtioning well at low rpms.
