Default No 3rd or 4th?? Help!

Ok, this is a very odd problem that came out of no where. The car is a 91 hatch with a B16 and a S1 transmission. The person who swapped the engine rigged the shift linkage up to work , they are to long BUT the vehicle still goes into each gear.

To the story. I was coming out of Sheetz and I was shifting at about 3,500 RPMs, went to shift it in 3rd and all it did was grind. Tried going into 4th and it acted as if it wasn't there so i just went into 5th. I drove it to where I needed to go, parked for about 20 minutes and took it back out to see what it would do. I shifted at about the same RPMs, nothing crazy and went threw 1st, 2nd, and I got it to go into 3rd. It did not sound pretty doing it but it went in..and 4th gear was still not there. Drove around the corner and the car would not go into 3rd again. On the way home it started to get hard to put in 1st gear. It would go in just not as easy as it should.

I've got Avid shift linkage that I was going to put in tomorrow but right now I may have some larger problems . I have not checked the fluid in the tranny either. Before i go jumping to conclusions I would like to know what some of you think this problem may be.

Cliff:
Car went into gear perfectly fine. Got gas. Leaving the gas station it had no 3rd or 4th gear. Parked again. Took it out and went into 3rd gear once but not again. 1st gear started to become slightly hard to get into.

Any thoughts would be appreciated! Sorry for such a long story!

Well, you know that your current shift linkage was jimmy-rigged, so that'd probably be the place to start. It wouldn't hurt to check the fluid as well.

check to make sure that the threaded collar down on the bracket where it mounts to the tranny isnt broken. my buddy had this problem, turned out his huge *** battery hit that collar and broke it.

Yeah. Well I will check that also. It was dark when it happened and I don't have a jack at my house at this moment so i couldnt check anything tonight. I just wanted some ideas as to what I can look at to check off. I will check the cable tommorow morning.

Someone metioned the shift fork could possibly be causing this? The last thing I feel like doing is ripping out the tranny.

UPDATE:

Checked the cable adjuster. It's fine.

Topped of the fluid.

Changed the linkage and put a roll pin in it.

Car still does the same thing. We went threw the gears while it was in the air and you could start the car in any gear but would not be able to shift into them. So I am thinking the tranny is done. I more than likely will be pulling it soon.
