Default car wont start, not getting fuel to the fuel rail

My brother is stuck at work right now because his hatch wont start... He says it wants to start and sounds like its about to but never does.. He took the fuel line off the rail and there is no fuel coming from it..

Anything else to check before we replace the fuel pump? He tried to check if the fuel pump is priming but he is next to a highway so he can't hear anything.

Tell him to sit in the back seat and reach for the key to listen for the fuel pump. Either way, you have a couple of possibilities. Besides the pump, the filter could be clogged or just faulty and needs to be replaced (their cheap). Other than that, there could be a leak somewhere, but with absolutely no gas reaching the fuel rail, there would be an abundance of gas leaking, and you guys would be able to smell and see it after a certain point. Since he took that fuel line going to the fuel rail, it's either a leak, bad pump, or bad fuel filter.

Oh, he does have gas in it right?

check the fuel filter. its located on the firewall. Take both lines off an blow through it, if you can blow through it pretty easily, the filter is fine. another way to check if its the filter, is to take off the fuel feed line (line going through the firewall), put the end into a container and turn the key to on, if fuel comes out, then it might be a clogged filter. at least that way you know the pump is priming..

It might also be the main relay assembly located under the dash (pain to get to though).

check the filter first though, if its not that, let me know and ill post instructions on how to test the main relay assembly, and to test your wiring (i have the whole shop manual..)

take your main relay's cover off and heat up all the solder connections. and add just a bit more solder. see if thath fixes it. it's worth a shot... usually the main relay's go bad and have tiny breaks in the solder connections from over time.
