Bell Helmet Recommendations ???
Ok, its time for a new helmet. I had a Bell Sport 3 and was very happy with it, but I caught a rock at an indoor kart track and the outer shell is damaged. I don't think that it would pass a tech inspection.
So time for a new helmet. I'm somewhat partial to Bell simply because there isn't a place around here for me to go try on random helmets and I like how the bell's fit me.
I would like a larger eyeport than my old sport 3 had, so I'm considering the Bell M4. Lighter would be nice if possible. I would also like better ventilation than I had with the old Sport 3.
The Bell Br-1 also looks interesting. Any input would be appreciated. I need to get this ordered in the next 2-3 weeks.
I don't wear glasses, but I do have a big dome.

The vortex is a little out of the budget right now
I like the s2r. I'll be doing hpde's and I never had my visor down on the sport3 anyways. How is breathability in the s2r? I remember my sport3 could get a little stuffy after a while.

I have been using the Bell br-1 this year and it is great.....$399
I have tried a few other helmets in my local scca club, but this one just fits right and has pretty decent air flow....

Just an update. I ended up going with the Bell M4. Great helmet. It has a larger eyeport than my old Bell Sport 3 and seems as though there is a bit more room in the mouth area so the helmet was actually much more comfortable. My visibility was a little better and it didn't feel as stuffy. While it fit very snug, it was still comfortable. My Sport 3 used to actually get uncomfortable after the 2nd or 3rd session of the day.
I noticed that it also has indentations where your ears go, so it would probably be a little more comfortable if you had an earpiece/headset in your helmet.

as far as i know, only motorcycle class helmets offer that feature.
i don't think it's a good idea anyway-i always drive with the visor up,and it'd be too tempting to do the same with that style helmet, basically eliminating any advantage of the full-face design.

i dont see how thats possible to even wear in a car without a convertible and the top down. it would hit the roof, most ppl have head clearance issues as it is.

and the other problem is that the SNELL foundation DOESNT certify any flip up motorcycle helmet. so without a snell M certification, its not allowed in any track group as Snell M rating the lowest allowable, if at all.
edit: interesting talk about snell and flip ups. http://www.iamnotafraid.ca/fli...t.php

Snell does not dismiss out of hand any helmet design that strays from the conventional. Snell does not point out any design specifications other than general requirements in our standards. We are however, always concerned with innovations and new designs that may effect the helmet's ability to protect the wearer, or in some cases the helmets potential to cause injury. At present the Foundation has not had the opportunity to test any of the flip up front type helmets for certification. We do not find any fault with these designs as long as they are used according to the manufacturers instructions and meet all of the requirements of the standard. We will also certify any size of helmet as long as it meets the same requirements as any other Snell certified helmet. </TD></TR></TABLE>
i take my words back about Snell "DOES NOT" certify any flip ups. its simply that they havent been submitted to test. and the reason is assumed because no flip up helmet is going to be designed for competition, so it doesnt need to be snell certified, which increases the cost of each helmet.

With the regulations aside, I just thought it was an idea, thanks for posting the pic, exactly what I was talking about but I didnt think it would be worn that way while driving, its just liked by some for other reasons.
In Japan folks where baseball helmets and even less protective helmets on their motorbikes legally, these flip ups that you posted the pic of is semi popular.

I haven't had any issues in any caged car. Mine is not caged but the H5 car I drove at VIR I had no issues with the visor. It comes off very easy too. I was more scared of the FFR that I had to ride in but didn't have any issues with the helmet.
