Default Shot Peening?

Is it really worth it to shot peen stock rods. Im doing the ls crank and rods in a gsr block with itr pistons. My friend suggested shot peening the rods since i got arp rod bolts, just as extra insurance. But its just a mild build, should i get the rods shot peened? If so, more or less how much should i be paying for the 4 rods to get it done?

Is this true shot peening or are they just bead blasting the rods? Shot peening and bead blasting are two different procedures. If your rods have been shot peened don't have them bead blasted because it could affect the surface of the metal. What shot peening (and bead blasting, although not as much) does is compress the metal on the surface of the rod to reduce any stress on the 'skin' of the rod. Any stress you can relieve is beneficial. You may want to have it done if the rods have been banged around, like if they were just thrown in a box together. Wrap the rods in newspaper or something similar and keep them where they won't get banged around. Usually the first thing that goes on a catastrophic engine failure is the rods so you want them as strong as possible.

save your money and buy some eagle rods.. thats my advice.. if you cannot wait atleast put arp rod bolts in them.. your redline will be right about 8k with those rods.. and yes im sure you will find some people who have revved them to the moon and did not have issues but those people are just the lucky ones.. do it right the first time then you do not have any worries..

or you could buy good rods... like some crower maxi lites or some pauters (light weght). If your going for the low dollar idea.... then: polishm, shotpeen, arp bolt them and bush them.

im going w/ arp rod bolts, shot peen, is polishing necessary to identify cracks or just for cosmetic reasons?

Dude don't just start polishing everything... I'm talking about that line on the side of the rods that looks like it is left from casting. Polish them flat, nice and smooth to eliminate it as a stress riser. try to search on how

just clean them and add arp bolts and your done.. <TABLE WIDTH="90%" CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=0 ALIGN=CENTER><TR><TD>Quote, originally posted by cptengineer &raquo;</TD></TR><TR><TD CLASS="quote">

of course their are better rods than eagle but eagles are inexpensive and they work.. with the attitude you have about it youre basicly saying might as well buy some corrillo rods.. since you say good rods. i will tell anyone who is planning to use stock ls rods to use eagles. stock ls rods are not good rods.. if you plan to not rev over 8k then sure you can use them with rod bolts but who is going to build a honda engine and not rev over 8k?

eagle rods are perfectly good for just about anyone on here.. i have them in my 278hp 2ltr and they have hundreds of dyno runs on them and it hasnt blown up yet so i would say they work..
