ELD (Electrical Load Detector)
When i drive my 88 CRX SI with the lights on the dash lights dim unless i push down the gas so i did research in my chiltons manual and it said there was a part called an alternator control unitwell after finding out that an ACU is not a real part in a honda crx and my chiltons manual is a poot face i find out that the real thing is called the ELD. So my dad went to the honda dealer today and they knew all about the ELD they even gave him a sheet about what is purpose is and what the symptems "for lack of a better word" of a bad one are including dash and head lights dimming but they didnt have any for sale and they contacted wherever they get their parts from and the other place didnt have any either so im wondering if i can get one or if i need a whole new fuse box assembley because i dont want to rewire that thing

no, it just a few wires to change. very easy even for a tard, just get a used one from a junkyard but make sure it matces exactly (year and trim) cause there are differences that you would not expect. they all look the same on the out side but the fuses are in different order and have diff purposes on differnent trim levels.
btw, it's the under hood fuse box, not the one under the dash

you can also check Ebay, I'm not saying another unit will not work I'm just saying to make sure it matches yours to a tee
Somebody may actually chime in that can confirm if any other boxes work on your car

well i brought in the new alternator from before and they tested it a second time and it worked fine for them but then they jsut gave me a OEM back to replace it to see if anything different would happen so i put it in and boom everything works normally so i guess i learned to buy OEM all the time even tohugh pretty much everything is on my car hah stock

ok nevermind i drove it today with teh headlights on and it was doing the same low voltage crap again so it worked for a little while last night but now it doesnt looks like i need a new fuse box
Your computer would throw a code if the eld was bad. I have had 2 crx's and 1 hatch. some stock some with swaps. ALL of them had lights that dimmed quite a bit at idle. As soon as you give it a little gas they get bright again. I believe this is normal. I have driven some of them over 100,000 miles like this. I would not worry about it unless your car is cutting off or you are having charging problems. If you need a new fuse box I have 2 spares. You can have one if you want. Just contact me if you want it I dont really need 2 spares. $15 for shipping for 3 day priority mail.
ok ok so everyone youve driven has done that because tonight i jsut went and tested my car i backed it outta the garage and let it sit in idle and it was charging like 13.6 with dash lights all bright "this is with teh headlights and highbeams on" then i drove it a 71/2 mile loop and came back to my house and let it sit in idle and all the lights were dimming again also have you tested either of the fuse boxes
Both fuse boxes are good they came out of some of my cars that were running before they went to the junk yard. The ECU would throw an eld code if there was something wrong. Just go to any auto store if you think there is still a problem most will test the charging system for free, They can test it with a load on as well. If your car can drive around for a couple weeks without the battery going dead there should be no problem.
Right now my car is converted to obd1 and I actually have the ELD disconnected and the ecu is chipped to not throw an ELD code. I still have no problems.

all 3 of the crxs i have do that dash light dimming thing at idle. I replaced the ELD in one of them with a new fuse box (because it had an ELD code) and it still does that. my old crx with 40k miles on it also did that. i think they just charge better at a higher rpm. if you want bright dash lights all the time look into a LED conversion there are step by step write ups on here.
I had this problem recently on a prelude, turns out it was a loose ground at the thermostat housing. Check it, you never know its worth a try. If its still your fuse box all crx or civic ones will work just change it over and if you notice the relays are not the same or not there at all just swap them over from your old fuse box. That I can confirm i fix it on my hatch.

Whats the point or did you have to bypass the ELD for the obd1 conversion. if you can't tell im jsut getting into worknig on cars all ive done on my CRX is rebuilt 3 fenders, replaced a thermostat, and the alternator so im pretty new to all this stuff so sorry if i sound helpless.

So did you replace the underhood fusebox on your hatch and the dash dimming actually went away?

I did replace it on the hatch and it worked for me, but like I said check all your grounds first. In most cases when the therm. housing ground is loose it will trigger ELD(have the prelude as experience with this). CHECK ALL CONNECTIONS. good luck.
whered you get the fuse box. Did you buy it new? I wonder if one from ebay would be ok or if its too big of a chance...
Ill keep checking too see if all grounds are tight 2

If your grounds were loose, you'll have more problems than just dim lights. ELD will detects electrical loads and send a signal to your ECU. ECU will then try to speed up the RPM to comprensate. If you can get like a good known ECU, trying swapping it over and see if the problem goes away. Also, I would just check if your alternator is healthy enough. Good luck!
where is the ECU and what does it look like ive only found the ELD and i was planing on ordering a used fuse box off ebay tommarow and as far as the alternator and battery go they are both brand new
Is there actually a problem with your car? Do a load test, read what the specs should be in the manual, and see if your car matches. If it does, no problem.
And for reference, my current daily driven (Not by choice...) crx does this, and ive recently replaced the alternator. Charging system is all in spec, yet the lights still dim. Its not a problem.
Infact, i dont think ive ever had a 20 year old car where the lights didnt dim at idle. And ive had a couple.

well if i am going down a hill with high beams on and i coast for about a quarter mile by teh time im at the end of the coast the dash light are pretty much off "very dim" i have a volt meter in the cigerette adapter and wheni do a coast like that it will be like at 11.2 or something around there at the bottom

the way i fixed mine was replace the black fuse box under hood. check your ground and see if u can replace your fuse boxes

ELD code issue- wears/burns motor oil faster, makes engine idle louder n roughly, and struggle in acceleration, n burn more then 1/2 ur tank extra of gas. I got a 93 civic n i opened my hood and unscrewed my fusebox lift it out n remove the lower plastic panes & I see around 4 wiring harness clips n the eld is a size of 1/2 a snickers bar & connected to 3 wires, if u disconnect ur whole underhood fusebox n remove the harness clips ,u can manage to dissamble the fusebox n you'll see couple screws securing the eld, I relocated mines externally, until i get another one from a junkyard then i just do the quicker ez method of replacin my eld, & by the way - get a repair manuel, i got a haynes one & i did the testing of measuring the volts; 1 test failed which was the underlevel of volts with the low beam headlight on with accessories on (key on 2nd "II" position), n it says that if results not corect, then replace eld which requires to change the underhood fusebox.
im am having a similar problem but my car only idles, n struggles acceleration. i have a b18c, would i be okay getting a new fuse box with the eld, from a gsr integra or just my regular one?
