Default B16B redline...searched.

Almost every thread I've searched turned into an argument. I'd like to know the stock redline on the B16B. Hmotors give hp and tq, but that's really it.

What are/is the main advantages over this motor and why is there such a large price difference in the swap? (I know the LSD tranny has something to do with it)

It's a glorified B16. Don't bother. For that price, I'd much rather have a B18C1 and have a little extra torque.

x2, a lot of the enthusiasts in japan get the stroker kit and up the displacement. I think spoon sells a genuine honda kit.

But yes, for the money just go with the ITR. If you get a 98+ spec the gearing is a little better.

B16B is the EK9 type R engine.
185 hp @ 8200 rpm
16.3 kgm @ 7500 rpm
i would go with gsr or b16a sir 2. b16b is pricy

My situation goes is like this. I have a B16 in my crx now, AC, with some really nice suspension and exhaust.

A friend of mine just got a 95 coupe with a B16B and wants to do a trade. So, I'm wondering the main differences....performance wise bewteen the 2 engines.

I've driven a GSR hatch and a friends ITR hatch and really like the torque in them. I noticed the B16B has the same HP as the GSR, but still lacks the torque.

Thanks for the input so far guys, I really appreciate it.

HP sells cars/engines.

Torque wins races.

I can't ever say it enough.

Yes, I'm not sure which is worse, the ricers that think the B16A is something to dream about, or the ricers that think the B16B is something to cream about.

@ OP:
Get a GSR - you'll appreciate it every time you suck up a B16B.

Larger IM, dual valve springs, more aggressive cams, better flowing valves, better flowing head, and obviously lsd as you mentioned above. I personally love my motor, and have never been impressed by mild gsr motors. ITR's are a different story...

that point is pretty much null when we're talking about b-series that rev 8000+ rpm

b16 2nd-3rd shift has like a 30.8% reduction, when we rev to 8500 in 2nd gear on a b16b, then shift to a 1.458 3rd, rpms fall to ~5887rpm.

if you look at the formula for horsepower you will see that hp = (tq * rpm) / 5252

power below 5252rpm is called "torque"
power above 5252rpm is called "horsepower"

look at any dyno graph and no matter what, tq and hp will be the same at 5252rpm because of the formula.

On older domestic v8s that rev to 5500, that's only ~248rpm above that 5252 crossover. Which means....

torque matters more for pushrod v8s that can't rev.
torque doesn't as much for b-series because they can rev very high.

Honestly, what's ridiculous is the amount of 1.6L bashing that goes on in this forum and elsewhere. The same people doing the bashing would have you believe that the additional ~200 cc of displacement makes the 1.8L counterparts vastly superior performers.

There's nothing wrong with a B16A. It generates 100 hp per litre, and if you compare performance numbers from two vehicles that are identical other than the fact that one is powered by a B16A and one is powered by a B18C1, the difference will be minimal.

The B16B is also an excellent engine. It generates 115 hp per litre, and has a terrific R/S ratio. It is a very good platform for use in racing situations where an engine must reliably spin above 7000 for extended periods. It also has all the same upgrades as a B18C ITR engine (indeed, they're essentially identical other than the B16B's shorter stroke and different pistons).

Yes, the GS-R's B18C1 is also a great engine, but that doesn't mean that someone who chooses a B16A or B16B and (*gasp!*) elects to follow an N/A path is somehow stupid or foolish for doing so. To each, his own.

You're denying that the GSR isn't significantly better in terms of power and in terms of torque than the B16a?

To begin with, this thread was discussing the B16B, which makes 15 more horsepower than a GS-R, and only 10 fewer lb/ft of torque. It also spins 400 RPM higher, and has a transmission with more favourable gearing and an LSD. I'd have a hard time considering the GS-R "significantly better" in this situation.

The B16A generates only 10 fewer hp (2 fewer for the JDM-spec, rated at 170 ps) and either 12 or 17 fewer lb/ft of torque (depending upon the model). Gearing is again more favourable than the GS-R, and once more, the GS-R is hardly generating what one could consider "significantly better" numbers.

the GSR is better than the b16a i admit. but if i were to claim that i am vastly superior because of my extra 10hp and 16ft/lbs of torque id be a fool. its funny how only us in the honda world care so much about that little of a difference. there arent any nissan, dsm, or domestic guys whining, so why are we?

because everyone in the honda scene is a primadonna.

i use my gsr for work and family, its hauls around my samples and when needed an extra 750 lbs worth of friends, uphill.

kinda hard to get my revs real high.

meh, its works for me and its streel legal.

Osaka motor's description says the B16B redline is at 9000 rpm.
